Dropkick Murphys’ Story

Tome | October 25, 2024

Back in ’96, Dropkick Murphys kicked off in Quincy, Massachusetts, playing in basements and tiny bars. Almost 30 years after their foundation, Dropkick Murphys are more than just a band; they’re a force for good that puts their money where their music is.

They use to be great! I recall one Rat show where Mike was telling us not to take the shit from Red Sox fans (the rat and Fenway park were right across the street from eachother). I remember the show mike said he was leaving the band to become a firefighter. Was even at the bruisers show where Al said theyd be taking a break because he was joining dropkick. After Mike left it was all down hill! They shoulda changed their name cuz theyre not the same. Theyve become generic Boston pub music. Its trash!!!

I was roadie for a Providence,R.I. band that played those early shows with them good boys, and believe me when I say you couldn't find a group of nicer, more humble and Goddamn genuine fellas! Ken literally gave me the shirt off his back one night! It does kinda suck that their shows have been co-opted by Douchebag knuckleheads, but 30+ years later and they are still as true as we all were back at the Rat in 97!

They were cool and great back in the day. Then the frat boys found out about them and it became lame. Saw them last year. Worst show I’ve ever been too. So many roided out frat boys trying to start fights etc. left the show a quarter of the way through.

MIKE MCcolgAN gave them the more authentic punk rock sound in my opinion. Couldn't figure out that something had to change. THANK YOU TOME. Now I know it was because of mike 😢😢
