Corporate interference in democracy is precisely why superPACs need to die. Most people don't understand how AI works, and what it's actually useful for at this time. I find it helpful for many things I would find difficult and/or tedious, so I'd rather use Claude because of the guardrails than ChatGPT or simply not using it at all.

Eh, from what I've seen, it's of an argument from the ontology of intelligence. There is something that separates that which is generally intelligent and that which isn't, and unless you mean to argue that there's something supernatural about that separation (and, tbh, even if you did argue it in a way that respects the science), there's nothing out there saying that such intelligence can't be either replicated (with a grown brain), imitated (like how both planes and birds fly despite it not being in the same ways, but for minds), or simulated (a physics sim of a brain).
This means that, kinda like with aliens but even worse because humans at least have an example of general intelligences in other humans, it's something that has to be disproven as opposed to proven. That, of course isn't to say that current AI is close anymore than it is to say that an ecosystem that develops mammals will have them evolve to make civilization in a few million years, just that it's not something that lies in the scientific paradim of "this is impossible" or even "this is improbable even in 100 years more of research" because of how the argument works.
It also isn't a useful statement to say "just a theory", but I guess that's already well trodden enough ground to find easy info on. 😅 I'll still probably read that book, though… sounds interesting. 👍🏾

Not really sure by what line of reasoning Americans would leave an AI company that recently entered into an agreement with the Pentagon to go to the AI company that did originally enter into the agreement with the Pentagon and is currently being used to hallucinate that a school is a legitimate military target.
Anthropic is still being used by the Pentagon, its obviously not instantly replaced.
All of this makes me believe that research I read that the average American typically scores 2 under average IQ, its at least true for 2,5 million new Anthropic users

Your explanation that "no one can define AGI, most people just say we'll know it when we see it" is like if a doctor confidently claimed that "no one can define constitutional interpretation, most judges just say I'll know it when I see it" ignoring originalism, textualism, precedent, and structural analysis that actual constitutional scholars debate.
You should know better than to speak confidently and with professional authority about a subject outside your expertise. It's not only harmful but extremely hypocritical.

These technology/AI people would not know ethics if it slapped them in the face. None of these people have ever taken a ethics class or know anything about ethics as a system of thought. Really highlights why a liberal arts education IS important. Maybe if more people in this country were actually educated in ethics we wouldn’t be here

I don't like how Amodei can just lie openly and still get treated as the ethical alternative.
Has anyone explained what their system even does? Amodei just insinuates that Claude is somehow going to operate robots, but Anthropic are not even making those control systems.

If you think that these AIs that are taking up so much power and data centers and water and all that are just guessing the next word, you may want to check into that more. It's more concerning than that. Check out a recent AI interview with Neil deGrasse Tyson on StarTalk. The same guy that StarTalk interviewed did an interview with Dr Mike. He had slightly different audience so he presented it slightly different way so not a bad idea to see both. Sorry I don't remember the name of the guy himself

I have to say, you're rapping on a company for being somewhat responsible. The rules aren't set, so there is no standard to hold them to. At least they are trying… we cant stop AI, but they are trying to at least regulate it. Can't fault them.

gawdamn, I had a look for that book and, at time of writing, the entire Chicago Public Library system has 98 holds across 30 physical copies, and 75 holds on 20 digital copies. guess there's a significant portion of folks concerned and looking to get informed; bummer that there's a concerning situation in the first place, but I'm glad to see people still turning to their public libraries for info.
