Deftones EROS Track-By-Track REVIEW

Metal Trenches | June 25, 2026

The rumors are true, the long shelved Deftones album Eros has leaked. It remains unfinished, but we HAVE to talk about it after wondering about it for nearly 20 years!

Eros turned out to be much more complete than the band ever admitted. As it exists it kind of has a low fi SNW meets self titled vibe. While it would’ve turned out to be a great album, I’m ok that Deftones scrapped it in favor of Diamond Eyes. One of the great things about Deftones is that each album is a sonic departure from the last one, and Eros sounds a little too close to SNW vs how DE turned out. I’d still love for the band to finish these songs.

I get conflicted when leaks like this happens. I like to think this is a cool way of honoring their friend who unfortunately passed before the album was even completed. But at the same time, some of these songs weren't fully fleshed out and it's not the band's best material. I mean it was shelved for a reason, and (depending on which story you believe in) either a music exec at Warner, some outside source who got their hands on the album, or someone from the band decided to release the whole thing to the internet.
I'm not thrilled, but I'm also not disappointed that I finally get to listen to this. Smile and Candy were definitely the stand outs for me

Understanding the context and history of this release made this listening experience felt like I was seeing the spiritual remnants of what could have been playing for the first time in its rawest state. If this were an actual fleshed out album I would actually put it on my Top 5 as I feel with more of the direction and experimentation they wanted to go for, it would sound amazing.

Still have to go through their discography, but genuinely felt a bit spooked listening to this, and yet it’s compelling.

Thanks for doing this. I'm choosing not to listen to the album out of respect for the band's wishes, but I'd be lying if I said it didn't pique my curiosity. The clips in this video sound great, and I'm happy to hear you dug it. I'm perfectly satisfied with their already released material and will continue to be until they release a new album, so I don't need Eros in my rotation.

Listened to it 4 times through now, really digging it.
A few songs sound like the around the fur era and others like SNW & Diamond eyes era.
If it were mixed and finished I think it could be in my top 5 Deftones albums
