Late night has not been the same since he left. He was last torchbearer of the Carson/Letterman era. Its a dry wilderness now.

Some things are more important than money. Yes $45 million is more than most of us can fathom. It's little compared to inheriting the house that Johnny Carson built. Any subsequent host has been but a caretaker of the Carson legacy, and what an honor that would be. I think Conan realized that honor and took it seriously to the point of making sure Tonight remained at 11:30 even if it meant his departure. The $45M was money NBC would have had paid Conan had he continued to host Tonight. The network breached the contract and thus was obligated to pay it out.

A snapshot in time that I remember. At a press conference introducing Conan before his first show replacing David Letterman. Lorne Michaels called Conan one of the best writers in the industry. Unfortunately, that industry was tuna fishing.

Conan had the best writers, because he gave them a reason to be one. He gave them the tools to success, he paid them, he treated them graciously, and he respected every one of them. Conan always has been, and always will be the greatest Late Night talk show host of all time. No human being, will ever take his place. Andy has always been more than a “sidekick.” Andy has been Conan’s secret weapon. The most powerful tool in his arsenal. Andy has been his equal the entire time.

I watched Conan's first ever episode, live, in the 90's when I was in my college dorm. I'm 51 now, married with three kids, and this man has been making me laugh for 30 years. There will never be another like him.
