Chris Fleming | He Is Way More Popular This Time | Mike Birbiglia’s Working It Out

Mike Birbiglia | April 21, 2026

The last time comedian Chris Fleming was on Working it Out, the episode was titled “He Should Be Way More Popular.” In the 2 years since then Mike’s wish has come true. Chris and Mike chat about the pros and cons of having a higher profile in comedy, including the protective steps needed to avoid legal action from Adam Driver over a bit. Mike also takes the chance to respond to the shots Chris takes at Mike in his new HBO special Live at the Palace, and Chris talks about getting glared at by Ryan Gosling. Plus, Mike and Chris work out lots of new jokes about drum circle friend groups, hotel smells, and dog DNA tests.

I tried to find the clip that Mike is talking about at 26:03 but I wasn’t able to find it. If you have seen it, is Mike doing a small impression of PSH here? And secondly, does anyone resonate with the quote in the same way Mike does? I personally don’t and kinda don’t understand the meaning behind it that he is trying to communicate. I don’t understand that sentence to mean anything other than a simple logical tautological statement.

Chris Fleming and free bleeding… I really want to hear more about his take on this, since it comes up frequently in his jokes. Is free bleeding like a power move, in his eyes? Unhinged feminism? A fun trickster move? Hot?

Very nice: one comedian sharing notes on another comic's work. There is evident love and respect between them (even though the relationship is brand new). I wish more people would be willing to share openly, set aside ego, and allow God's work to shine through. This exemplifies how iron sharpens iron.

    Thanks for sharing!

I haven't been this giddy about a comedian in years. I bought tickets for an SF show last year for all of my friends cause they got so annoyed with me misquoting his jokes 😂

Cigarettes mildewy maple syrup indicates pretty heavy drugs being melted and smoked.

Had the prospective subletter from hell last year.

Hadn’t even signed a lease, let her come a few days early to move her stuff in, first nught Shes smoking crack or melted fentanyl….

She was gone a few days later obviously. She’s lucky I didn’t k*ll her. She was doing this whike I was supremely chronically ill and the 100 year old lady in the apartment downstairs was ON OXYGEN…..

But the room STILL has the maple syrup smell.

I’ve literally washed the walls, like witb Lysol cleaning fluid and a clean mop….

The mattress was thrown out, all the furniture was washed.

    The curtains washed.

    The maple syrup smell remains.

    They’re so disgusting

Royal Oak show was absolutely hypnotized by Chris but also because the theater temperature climbed to 80 degrees within the first 5 minutes. Plus, iFreeze.

I thought this was a repost of the Chris episode from a few weeks ago. I am so elated that I was rendered incorrect. Can we get Chris on once a month at a minimum?

It's not that I don't find Chris to be a delight on stage but it's obvious a comedian is going to have some extra bravado pumping in them when performing, right? But whenever I see Chris in interviews he's just such a cutie pie. Like now I totally get and believe all his stories about men getting kind of protective over him.

I'm starting to feel protective over him. He has that energy of a freshly birthed fawn.

15:28 one thing Fleming excels at is the ability to use his stage energy as propulsion – since it's not a narrative, the usual guideposts and touchstones are gone. But, like a taxi in a foreign country, you just gotta trust him.

I saw Chris in Northampton, MA in February and sleepover giggly energy is exactly what that whole room felt like! One of my favorite bits was him simply being a brat on stage – the audience was warning him that his laptop battery was low and he was keeping us on the edge of our seats about whether he would plug it in or let it die 😂

The "small rooms" comment around the middle of the episode brings to mind the author's introduction to the book "Weird Like Us: My American Bohemia" by Ann Powers (Simon & Schuster, 2000) – highly recommended reading for any alt/indie artist.
