I was waiting for you to mention the Avro Arrow program and its demise. I feel like that was a major even in Canadian history, intersecting the economic post war progress with politics.

It was also a time when unions were very strong and were key to the creation of the middle class. Corporate revenue tax was between 35-52% which funded infrastructure and social programs. Conservatives are always "overly sentimental" when these are highlighted.

In most ways, life was much better back then in Canada and the USA. I guess I could say the same for any year before 911. I think that is when it all started to decline for the entire West.

Philosophically, it was also the heyday of the "Two founding nations" doctrine that would be replaced by Trudeau's multiculturalism.

In the 1950s Canadians were seen as MORE conservative than Americans. So things have really changed.
Do Comic Book racks still offer "Wholesome Comic Entertainment?"

IF you're looking for era suggestions, I'm curious what was happening in the 1920s. See what 100 years of perspective offer.

He has often been portrayed as a benevolent grandfather or Uncle Louis, as he was nicknamed. Calm, modest, and not particularly charismatic in the dramatic sense. He was no Trudeau Sr. or Diefenbaker. He was someone who governed without drama. But. Laurence left an infrastructure legacy ; the St. Lawrence Seaway, the RRSP system, an influx of immigrants, and his proudest accomplishment: Newfoundland's entry into Confederation in 1949.
He built the Trans-Canada Highway, the Trans-Canada Pipeline, modernized equalization payments, supported the arts, and reformed pensions.
He was not impressed by having talent around him, Pearson, C.D. Howe, Paul Martin Sr., Jean Lesage. He wasn't someone who let himself be governed by his ministers, he was someone who deliberately chose the best and trusted them.
His calm, rational logic, knowledge of the law, and aversion to political games earned him the respect of King, his Cabinet colleagues, and even the Opposition.
He wasn't a man who smoked his pipe while the bankers governed. He was a man who had so much institutional credibility, a leading corporate and constitutional lawyer for 25 years before entering politics at 59, that he didn't need to perform authority to actually wield it.

Thanks J.J, this information served me critically on my date. By the time I demonstrated knowledge of John Diefenbaker, the relationship was a lock-in

I like your retrospective here, although I have heard at least a few folks say that Canada of today is often seen as "punching above it's weight class" culture-wise. In that, there are a lot of well known Canadian artists from all venues that are recognized worldwide, much more than would be expected from such a small (population-wise) country. Although, I do recognize that I will focus a lot more on Canadian acts than others, simply because of my own bias. I mean, I'll never claim to be a Celine Dion fan, but I can't pretend that I wasn't proud as hell to see her on the Eiffel tower during the Olympics at Paris.

A video about Canada’s relationship with the US during the Vietnam War. How it supported the overall aims of the US war effort, while supporting, also, the safe harbor of US military deserters and draft evaders. As well as a robust counter culture and peace movement of its own.
