Call Yourself An Artist?! F**k Off!

Justin Hawkins Rides Again | May 2, 2026

I was sent a few articles by a friend about the news that now, in 2022, it takes nearly 5 writers on average to write 1 song. Dianne Warren remarked recently on how there are 24 credited songwriters on one of Beyonce’s latest songs. How can this be? Why is this so? Can no artist write a song of their own anymore? What happened to the singer-songwriter? Surely, if music is your passion and your craft you want to be writing songs from your heart, rather than manufacturing them? Are they all frauds? Or this a bit too harsh…maybe it is. You tell me.

Maybe Beyonce is being honest about her session musicians who contribute to writing the song. (Many do and dont get credit or paid properly) -so i think she's empowering for all that work for her. But then again i have no idea. So Nashvillian tradition. She doesn't need the money….. ….and black musicians have been underpaid for generations. Watch "Hired Gun".

I've only ever had an interest in artists that write their own songs without the help of outside writers. Dylan, Young etc. Songs from outside writers don't have the soul, mostly because they're almost always solely made for money. The songs that come from the artist themselves usually have more meaning and heart. In short, they just matter more.

the only "artists" I have a problem with are the ones that don't write songs or play instruments, and also cannot sing lol (rihanna). however, I'm more a fan of the singer-songwriters; there's just something about them singing their own thoughts & feelings, nothing compares.

but it does annoy me when the pop artists that have like 15+ songwriters on a song contribute a word or phrase or adlib and then talk in interviews about songwriting. like just own that you don't write songs, it's nbd. (dula peep & ariana grande.)

Is it just me or is the notion that a true artist does all the jobs a little weird?
I never complain that the chef who cooked my meal didn't farm the potatoes, make the cheese and butcher the cow.
Surely composition, musical interpretation and performance are distinct skills which can coalesce in rare individuals but I don't think it should be expected.

…I get that commercial music is a different beast.πŸ˜‰

I had no idea what a closet control-freak I was until I began writing / producing songs: especially as a female artist where the in-studio alpha-male dominance – or seeking thereof – is often ridiculous. As a result I never record more than one or two instruments in any one studio and record almost every instrument in different location! It's messy amd time-consuming but it works for my piece of mind & control issues! πŸ˜‚
This one – which was my second ever recording/ production – was an exception in that I couldn't think of a bassline so I released the reigns a bit & asked the bass player if he could come up with something. I'm so glad I did because I think it is the strongest part of the song. Do you like it Justin (apologies for opportunism!)? https://youtu.be/1V0ImKoWkD8

Songwriting is HARD. It’s not for the faint of heart. It’s an actual art a craft that requires time and skill… which many new β€œartists” haven’t put the time in, lack the skill or the vital imagination.

I'm from Nashville. Nobody writes their own stuff out here. It's kind of gross when a storytelling song from the artist singing it would be great to hear. There's a few. Just not many. It's a songwriter industry out here. A lot of rock artists have turned to country just so they can get paid

Sinatra didn’t. The whole Tin Pan Alley tradition up through Carol Bauer Sayer and Neil Sedaka era! It was really the Beatles and Dylan that brought the singer songwriter tradition back.

I suppose the key thing is how an artist appears, and how their work is portrayed and marketed
If you have a standard pop artist who rocks up, sings tracks (well) that are given to them and looks good, no one batts an eye.
However it would be a different thing if for their latest album, that same artist straps an acoustic guitar to their back, with ALL of their press, marketing and image is about how their music is so "personal", "authentic". That is when it starts to get Squiffy when this apparently "personal" record had a dozen writers working on it!

Blurred Lines is deemed unacceptable, demonised and its co-writer threatened, abused and cancelled , even though 'rape fantasies' are bigger than S & M in the female sex fantasy top 10 – and yet 50 Shades of Grey is loved by the Libby Lefty types.. Yet another bout of ILLIBERAL nut-jobbery and utter hypocrisy.. They're as bad as proper Conservative Christains when it comes to debased double standards.
