Philosophy Tube | September 5, 2025

Books to check out! Some neuroscience and brain stuff, Edward Said’s “Culture & Imperialism,” and Frantz Fanon on Muslim women wearing veils during the Algerian revolution! Very relevant to France and “burkinis.” Oh, and “Art is Dead’ by TomSka and Matt Ley.

As an Algerian I've always struggled with the idea that Camus represented what came to be known as l'ecole d'alger "the School of Algiers" and to this day his works dominate the discussion that pertain to Literary works from Algeria or north Africa, I think Algerian author Kateb Yacine's take on the "authenticity of literature" and how Camus's work can never be "Algerian" is quite interesting.
Hope you have a look at it here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpXExBh7UR0
Thanks for the great content Olly, I've always loved Edward Said's work and had this impression that he is not as read among theorists as he deserves to be , as for Fanon well my highs cool in Algeria was named after him so learned a thing or two about him at an early age

In a (few hundred) years, we will look back and say, "I cannot believe we let major streams of thought follow the idea that the human brain is divided into "two hemispheres." No wonder we figured nothing out.

I feel quite unintelligent on this channel. When commenters are talking, and debating all these amazing topics with great points and endlessly quotable comments and I'm just sitting here and all I can say at the end of all these mind blogging videos is "Wooooooaaahhh." In an attempt to express my awe. I just want to say thank you for the awesome videos, and the great book recommendations!

Amazing that everyone shames France for wanting to oppose religious garb and symbolism – as they have done for centuries now – but nobody seems to speak about how most Middle Eastern countries force or intimidate women into dressing a certain way. Try going outside of the tourist areas of Algeria and not wearing incredibly modest clothing as a woman and see how you're treated. Let's not even mention places like Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan……

Fantastic channel. I'd love your take on the ethics of rap/hip hop. i love it, but i feel somewhat compromised when the context revolves around violence, murder, greed, hopelessness and generally a very dark side of humanity.

You've mentioned that your channel has a low amount of hateful comments and I think I know why.
    1. You are sacrificing your time, energy, and money to bring people education for free. People see and appreciate that.
    2. You have a good personality. I don't know this one for sure, but you seem pretty cool.
    3. You really have something to say about what you're talking about and you know how to effectively convey that information. These book reviews are a perfect example. You just gave like 4 book reviews in 4 min and you made thoughtful and clear points that made it easy to understand what you have to say about the book and why you are saying it
