Alex Kidd DX is Almost Unrecognisable | Nostalgia Nerd

Head to https://www.squarespace.com/nostalgianerd to save 10% off your first purchase of a website or domain using code NOSTALGIANERD…. Finally, some 30 years on from his last outing Alex Kidd is back, in a remake of Alex Kidd in Miracle World, titled Alex Kidd in Miracle World DX. So no dramatic change there. The question is, does the game itself have any dramatic changes, or is this just a quick rehash of the Miracle World we knew and ̷h̷a̷t̷e̷d̷ loved. In this episode, I’ll take a look at Alex Kidd history, as well as opening up the Signature Edition games box set and then looking in detail at the new game itself. Does it hold up, or is it a floaty, frustrating piece of nonsense?

It's more noticeable when you're reviewing footage. But, if you watch at 11:54, you can see a point where the collision detection is way off. I get killed by the frog, despite there being a sizable gap between it and myself. That doesn't happen often in the game, but enough for you to go… hmmmm, there's something a little off here.

i loved the original but dont like the remake because for no logical reason whatsoever the graphics are blurry as hell like someone smeared Vaseline all over the screen. this was a conscious decision on the art team and god knows why they did it

    Hello!

I'm Daniel Parrado, the programmer of this game.

Sorry for taking so much time to comment but I shit you not: I have been looking for this video for years.

I watched a ton of reviews back in the days of the release so I wasn't able to find this one.

That weird sprite was a joke between Josyan and me.

He told me he used to have an unconventional interpretation of the frog enemy's sprite when he was a little kid.

He thought the nostrils were the eyes and the actual eyes were some kind of ears.

Then Josyan modified Alex' main sprite by adding the frog "face" and we called him "The actual hero of the game", "the actual main character", etc, as a joke.

Some time after that, I began using said sprite as a placeholder when I was coding the logic of the enemies while Narehop was making the final art.

I was pretty sure I removed all references to frog-kidd but looks like I left some behind and Unity Engine added it to the final build.

    So, mistery solved!

Thank you so much for the video, really appreciate it!

Via Steam, I've been able to play the Alex Kidd and Wonder Boy III remakes and rediscover two childhood favourites.
WBIII was a delight to play again, whereas I requested a refund on Kidd after less than an hour of play.

The "switch between new and old graphics with the push of a button" thing reminds me of the remaster of Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap… Which is similarly still-frustrating (I haven't played the original but the remaster felt a bit janky). I guess it's a Master System thing.

On the release day, the devs participated in some Twitch streams with spanish gaming influencers, as they're spanish. Turns out that the issue with the precission is actually a design decission to remain more faithful to the original, and not a bug or a flawed implementation, even they had toyed with other controls and those were just disabled (I believe that's the reason why there are those assets for adjusting the hitboxes). Seeing the reports from these streammers live and the community in general, they announced that they would enable these better controls as an option in an upcomming patch but the reviews were already on the way and it lost its momentum. Patch rolled 3 months later and nowadays there are options to enable reworked controls and adjusted collisions, which would make the game much more enjoyable.

To land a jump without over-running when you land on a narrow block, I let go of the DPad/Analog entirely once I see he's landed, and stick the landings now. It only took me since 1987 to 2021 to figure that trick out. 😉

I don't think that the Brexit thing with the coin is xenophobia, but what do I know. Either way it's pretty silly, but I imagine that they would have given it if they could.

"Alex the Kidd is frustrating…" yeah, that's why we had to actually be good at games back then. It was OK though, it occupied the time we'd otherwise be sitting about lamenting the fact that we only owned 2 games cos they're 35 quid each and it's 1992. You had to be good. I still haven't finished Alex, I got to the second castle, I think. I could still tell you how to beat scisssors-head and his mates. Did you know about the warp zone underneath the octopus?

Anyway, you soft kids today. Just cos his "health" didn't regenerate so you could just bungle about getting shot, as long as you had a little rest now and then, for his "shield" to recharge, all by itself ffs. Soft!

Alex the Kidd is a fantastic game, we're all lucky Sega put it in, and if you're not good enough that's not Alex's fault.

My sister owned a Mk.II with this onboard. I remember having fun with the game back in the day. Wasn't a bad system overall from what I remember.

I have been replaying the original Alex Kidd In Miracle World recently I totally forgot how difficult the game was never got far when i was a kid I remember losing that many times that I took the Cartridge outside and repeatedly jumped on it, booted it at the wall then for some reason I buried in in the garden

I turned on console on and of course bloody Alex Kidd booted up scared the crap out of me as I thought it was haunted.
