Alex Edelman | Boston Sports and Hospital Clowns | Mike Birbiglia’s Working It Out Podcast
With his fifth appearance, comedian Alex Edelman is the most frequent guest on Working It Out. Since his last appearance, Alex won an Emmy for his HBO stand-up special Just For Us, which Mike was a producer on. Now Alex is back on the road with a new hour of comedy, including a just-announced visit to Carnegie Hall. Alex discusses Boston sports memories, whether AI will replace comedians, and grieving the death of his creative collaborator Adam Brace. Plus, Alex’s rocky stint as a hospital clown, and his new job as a writer and actor on Greg Daniels’ highly anticipated follow up to The Office: The Paper.

I watched Alex’s Just for Us standup, on a recent flight. At first I thought a little too kitschy. But he draws you deeper into the storytelling and his perspective on friends, parents, and Judaism. It’s a well-woven and certainly a worthwhile mega-skit.
Then I went on to listen to a podcast where he talks about the frequency of comedians having notable. Doctor parents. He seems genuinely puzzled by this happenstance. The mystery is easily solved. Drs. have money, and they want their kids to have high-level success. So although it seems Alex has paid his comic dues, I’m sure he had times where he needed his income to be floated by Dad (he never mentions Dr. Moms-oops). So now the parents of these comics can hold their heads up and brag on their successful kids. It’s just another level of privilege that we have to be aware of. To have gender, racial AND financial privilege is the gold standard.. Why not? If it gives talented and thoughtful artists like Alex to hold up a mirror for us (everyone), it’s money well-spent.

I also hope it will draw attention to providing doctors and nurses with better hours and/or food choices. I hope the digital project can “listen” to their suggestions and help create a better work environment for them. THEY LITERALLY SAVE OUR LIVES! Further.. THEY MAY BE ABLE TO HELP WITH DIGITAL ARCHITECTURE PROGRAMS AS THE HUMAN PhYSiOLOGY IS “3D” .. THIS MAY HELP FUTURE DEVELOPERS OF ALL INDUSTRIES.. ESPECIALLY SPACE. GRATITUDE!

I just lost a friend suddenly of over 25 years. We were kids together, we ended up working together, I can feel Alex's pain so much. It hurts to hear him talk about it, it also makes me feel less alone. Thank you for being vulnerable and sharing. If anyone else wants to talk about losing a close one add to this thread an awesome thing about them. It's been helpful to hear these stories to deal with grief.

Mike, I need you just start using a compression filter on your audio, please. The range between an intimate interaction and a loud burst of laughter is stressing out my audio equipment. And my ears. Love your show…btw.

What is the horse in the horse-cop duo??? It’s obvious, it’s a cop-horse.

Don’t say horse cops or you’ll get corrected 87% of the time that they are “mounted police”

The got your nose needs zero redemption, it just needs more absurd like, “he pulled his nose off his meal tray and said ‘nice try, clown!’”

That was a good joke, Mike was too concerned about his eyesight and if that played into why it took him so long to resurface

40:59 People keep asking if we’re going to have control over AI in the future… We couldn’t even get Clippy to stop popping up in the ’90s.”
“You really think we’re gonna contain something that’s smarter than all of us combined? We lost the war when we couldn’t disable the paperclip.”

I'm working on a Clippy/AI sketch right now. They are the same thing with different pick-up lines…
Also, Mike not getting the Walter joke made it ten times funnier. I adore these two together.

I always just listen, but I came here to the video just to comment how Alex Edelman's joke jokes are now my two favorite moments in the whole show. I've listened to every episodes and nothing has made me laugh harder than him delivering street jokes. I tell my friends so I can feel funnier. The show introduced me to him, and listening to his special almost made me wreck my car. I love his stuff and I love this show

Do people in the U.S. actually call Mounted Police "horse cops"? If so, this isn't the craziest thing I've heard about Americans this week but it's pretty close.

Mike Greenwell just recently put a new coat of paint on it, slapped the roof proudly, and drove off into the sunset. It was beautiful.
But he did legitimately get into professional truck racing in the 2000's – did you just identify the spark that led to that second career?!
