Have any of the lawsuits touched on the possibility that AI-created music canNOT be copyrighted? I feel like if we prevent any AI-created music from being able to be legally copyrighted, it would cut down on this.

I'm so mad that sampling got burned as theft, essentially killing the art form, but AI companies can just grift willy nilly, WITHOUT the artistry and they expect us to be okay with it.

Edit: also, Epidemic Sound isnt much better, especially when they fill music services playlists with cheap filler tracks. Mood Music is a fantastic book that dives into it.

What all this shows IMO is that absolutely nothing is going to change until there is a government in place in the U.S. that is willing to actually write and implement laws that bring these corporations to heel. How we get there is a matter of debate

Also, I think the laws that would be written to control this would be laws about strictly requiring AI models to disclose all of their training data in public, with massive fines (100 million plus) for not doing so

No one is being stolen from. If you put your music online, another person can listen to it and copy from it much more directly and deliberately. AI doesn't store copies of the data that it is trained from.

The type of IP law that anti-AI people argue for is the type of IP that says Blurred Lines stole from Marvin Gaye, despite using zero parts of any of hs songs. It's a form of IP that will only benefit giant corporations that can pay to liscence dozens of works for every single new song. Regular small artists can't afford to do that. Say goodbye to hip hop artists being able to use samples, say goodbye to cover songs, say goodbye to musical tributes.

3:30 For a second, this reminded me of old YouTube days after a floor shift from Walgreens, spending the night watching Funhaus, Angry Video Game Nerd, and The Super Best Friends with a grin.

Isn’t there a kind of poison pill you can add to your mixes now? I think Ben Jordan is working on it. Perhaps we should keep fair use, but lobby to get a law passed that specifically bans training AI on copyrighted material.

I think this is also a great time to mention that Tidal just updated its policies towards AI, where you can still upload AI music but it will be tagged as such and you won't be able to monetize it. I know it might not be the best thing to still have it on your platform but it's much more than other streamers are doing right now…

Ok the sad part is: It's a paid article, no i'm not saying the author DOESNT DESERVE TO BE PAID: but it's a corporate news/magazine and the way to search is hidden under a paygate…

When i myself, I wanted to know if any of my non AI (as i've played around with AI music and i'm not entirely sold on it because the corporations sort of zoomed before anyone could really get a hold on the technology and now it's too late everything's fcked lol) – was trained on which it likely has by now unless suddenly that was post 2025 and pre just now — and in which case unless they ripped my whole youtube channel instead of using spotify or apple music (i used to be distributed i'm likely go ing back soon but the paid artciel thing just pisses me off)

The idea that someone's going to make a whole DECENT talk about AI music like this and force poeple to sub to the ATLANTIC? geesh.
Not everyone's got THAT Much extra money for somethign they'rte never gonna read agian.
Plus i don't want a free trial, tehy'll keep emailing me and i got enough issues with my email inbox

They've got six of my high school band's songs in there 😮 Not sure whether to be relieved or insulted they've not taken any of my solo stuff but oh well 😂

We already have cases of original music getting copyright struck because Suno says they own the piece which was made out of stolen work. An excellent young banjo player name of Campbell i believe, demonetized, recordings pulled. I posted an original live recording of a bach piece from the 1600s, played every part, used my own ornaments, unique instrumentation. Pulled for "copyright violation."

They want art dead. If u use it, you are an accessory.

If using lawfully acquired material to train genAI is fair use, then all sampling should be fair use as long as you bought a copy of the song. brb, ordering some Disney soundtrack CDs to take samples from, this will go well

Its getting alarmingly hard to avoid. My sister and I were listening to a folk Playlist on YouTube that had songs from real artists, but realized quickly there were also A LOT of AI songs mixed in.

It's shocking how right you are about them having everything you can think of in those datasets. Literally only one name I searched didn't come up out of 20 and that's probably only because they started after the datasets were made.

8:10 It is worth pointing out that as part of these settlements, both companies have agreed to restrict who is actually able to download the audio files that are generated. Udio flat out removed the ability for anyone to download audio files following their settlement with Universal, and while Suno has agreed to restrict downloads to paid subscribers following their settlement with Warner, they are reportedly still clashing with Universal and Sony since they won’t completely disable downloads for everyone.

I got duped into loving an ai song the other day….incredibly frustrated after i did some research and to find its huge on Instagram reels is even more frustrating.

AI music can't create parasocialism and cool concerts. I'm honestly not really worried about this AI songs when people crave so much human connection in music for these to succeed.

Spotify has been intentionally filling playlists with AI more even than you and others talk about. I know someone for whom 4/5 songs on his playlists were AI every time, whether he was playing G-Easy, Lil Jon, or Juicy J, or Gucci Mane, not only would 4/5 songs be AI generated with AI generated covers, the 5th were rock songs created by white men. Spotify is becoming very consistent in this for those who can’t or don’t constantly pay attention to what is playing.

Think of how many bars and coffee shops have songs playing in the background from Spotify. Those have been more and more filled with AI.
ESPECIALLY in places I have been that are staffed by non-English speakers whom might not realize what is playing.
