From 50 commercials as a kid to nine seasons as one of the most recognizable characters on television, Jaleel White has always performed for an audience. Growing up on set, he learned that giving people what they wanted got you somewhere. So he kept doing it — with fans, with his mother, with anyone who had an expectation of him.
After Family Matters ended, the work slowed and the identity he had built around it started to crack. He spent years as a single father taking whatever roles came. Now, looking back, he understands how much of his life he spent performing a version of himself, and what it finally took to feel like the real one.

In the mid 90s, every morning before middle school I'd watch "The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog" and on Saturday mornings I'd watch ABC's version of the show. I ended up developing an appetite for CHILI DOGS with shredded cheddar cheese messing with those episodes. I also enjoyed Family Matters on "Thank God It's Funny" Friday nights. Urkel turning into Stephan and Bruce Lee were memorable episodes for me. I'm glad to see Jaleel stayed out of trouble unlike a lot of child stars. I've listened to a few of his stories and man, the 80s and the 90s was definitely good to him. Hopefully that residual money made the years after just as pleasant.

Extremely surprised not to hear anything about Sonic here. I think he's most famous for that today, more than Urkel. But I suppose it would've been redundant for the video's narrative.
