Elephants are beautiful, intelligent and sensitive creatures, but they also possess a size and strength that makes it advisable not to provoke them.
“Mary (c. 1894–September 13, 1916), also known as “Murderous Mary”, was a five-ton Asian elephant who performed in the Sparks World Famous Shows circus. After killing circus employee Walter “Red” Eldridge on his second day as her handler in September 1916, in Kingsport, Tennessee, she was hanged in nearby Erwin.”

HOLY COW, I'm from Erwin. This story is practically a legend in my town. If I'm being honest, though, true thoughts of this "event" is mixed around town (I honestly see it as embarrassing.) I never knew the full story until now, but I honestly feel for Red and Mary. Neither should have been put in that situation, regardless of if the times were different to today.

There is a fan made video of the same elephant and at the end Mary was choked to death by her owner she helped build a crane like thing and she was hung on there til she was dead

Erwin's attempt to claim that they totally like elephants now feels somewhat insincere in my opinion. But to be fair, they only hanged one elephant once; it's not like they made a habit out of it or anything.
