Remember -60° (yes even windchill) = exposed flesh freezes solid in 60 seconds.

coldest weather i ever experienced was -40. i live in northern europe so im familliar with cold but the experience still really stuck. we were in a little cottage on the side of the road that wasnt as outfitted as a normal home and everything just broke. none of our cars would start, the busses stopped running, we had no running water bcs our water pipes broke, our toilet shattered, in the cold phones would quickly loose charge and touchscreens wouldn't work, cross country skiis couldn't go as fast etc etc. if you are a normal person living in an urban area it is almost impossible to die from exposure (barring freak weather events) but otherwise theese conditions mean that some bad luck or just 1 or 2 small mistakes can end with you getting turned into a meat-sickle (atleast if you are an average person without a lot of experience and knowledge).
If you;
-Hurt your leg
-Fall through a hidden snow bridge and get wet
-Overestimate your speed and get stuck in bad weather (headwind, whiteout etc)
-Loose track of the trail
-Loose your hat or gloves
you will be in a serious life or death situation immediately.
One thing I would add is that you need to dress differently depending on whether you are moving (For example, if your car is snowed in and you need to walk a couple of hours for help) or staying still.
When stationary, you want to maximize warmth but when moving overdressing is dangerous. Physical activity will make you sweat, which makes your clothes wet. Then once you stop to eat, drink, or navigate, the moisture makes you cold and makes your insulating layers less effective. In cold weather staying dry is just as important as staying warm. dress to be cool but comfortable while moving. You should feel cold if you stand still and at the beginning of the trip before you've built up any body heat, if you are warm at the start or when standing still you have put to much clothes on.

From a Wisconsinite, fantastic video, especially for driving on ice. I would add one thing. You've got to skid your car in a safe environment sometimes. Every Wisconsin kid has the story of dad taking them out to the school parking lot on a sunday to skid the car when they turned 16. Learning what it feels like to be in a skid and what starting to skid feels like cuts the crucial ~2 second "oh shit what is happening" and lets you get right to the business of "off the breaks, steer in, ride it out." Also, this is geeky but think like a pilot in terms of "command authority". Or for geeks… think "movement points". Your car has X number of points. You can use them to brake, accelerate, steer and maintain direction. When you exceed your budget you will skid. This means you can steer a bit, brake a bit, but you cannot steer AND brake a bit. You can steer and break a LITTLE bit, but if "little" turns to "a bit" you skid. you can speed up, you can turn, but you cannot do both. Also EVERYTHING is cold to a hot brake, the extra cold outside does not meaningfully affect brake overheating, so you want to pulse, not ride. brake a little, off, brake a little, off, brake a little, off, as opposed to braking constantly and experiencing fade. This also helps stretch your "command authority" by reducing the "budget demand". That last one is a bit nuanced but basically… act like you don't have antilock brakes even if you do when the weather is extreme.

The important thing for people to understand about the ceramic pot "heaters", because people like to argue about them, is that the point isn't generating more net heat. They don't do that. They're about taking the candle heat that would have immediately gone straight to the ceiling where you cant feel it, and holding it in the pot to be radiated slowly in a place where you can put your hands/face near to feel more comfortable.

Just get an ECWCS system if you have the money, even used. It’s the system the army uses and it has configurations that are certified for Antarctica. You can wear layers of it for chilly temps down to insanely cold environments. My favorite part is the waffle top, it even has thumb holes so you can cosplay an emo teen.

I survived homelessness in Maine. Coldest night out -22°F in February. I had a blanket and about 5g’s of horse. I credit the horse for keeping me alive. Counterintuitive I know, but it did work. I don’t recommend.

I live 45 minutes north of Atlanta. Where I live does get a lot colder than Atlanta itself does but I can't say that this past winter wasn't anything special as far as I can remember but I wasn't in Atlanta itself. Maybe there was some kind of hellish freezing happening all around me. Either way this is a good stuff to know. That dumb idiot my soon to be ex-wife is going to explode her windshield one day

It's not the same, temps only got into the 20s at night, but I survived being homeless in a tent in the woods on the Oregon coast for 3 months. If you're not aware, the Oregon coast is beautiful in summer, but winter is nothing but driving rain, sleet, and cold. I wore a windbreaker, a puffy lightweight jacket, a hoodie, and probably a few shirts. I put on every pair of pajama pants I had. At first, i had an air mattress to keep me off the ground, but eventually that popped. I had a large tarp over the top of the tent, essential for keeping rain out obviously, a sleeping pad, and a regular comforter. Before i went to bed, I'd make an insulated bottle full of boiling hot decaf tea to stick under my blankets, that way it would heat me up as it slowly released heat, and i could drink something hot if i woke up cold. Maintaining the dryness of everything was essential, and very hard, even if my tent didn't flood, which it did a couple times. Your breath condenses on everything. There will be dampness and mildew problems. I was living a couple miles from town in a national forest, so every week or so I'd have to walk to the laundromat to clean and dry everything again. That's essential, like flesh simulator said
Anyway, that was 3 years ago, and I'm doing significantly better, although things got sketchy again last year. Being homeless taught me a lot of things, including that I'm way more tough and resourceful than I thought I was. Also, even though i felt constantly alone, exposed, and scared, the roaring and crashing of the giant waves during the winter, especially during King Tide, were a beautiful and austere soundtrack. It helped me fall asleep at night

Coolant works pretty well at softening the ice so you can scrape it with a credit card. Save you from buying the scraper that'll take up space in the car for the rest of your life.

Just going to share this for anyone who needs it.
Something Gramps did before he passed, he was a retired firefighter and EMT.
If you're dealing with bad weather coming
Get a tarp. Put your windshield wipers up and put the tarp over the windshield. If you want to be extra. Also grab a moving blanket. Throw it up first, then the tarp over. When the snow and ice hits, It'll be on the tarp and not the windshield.
—
Also from the IT background and getting way too many amazon packages. Throw some of those silica gel packets (the big ones if you happen across them, the small ones if not) in your car's cabin. Just like with beef jerky, they'll pull the excess humidity from the air inside the cabin and stop too much condensation, which means no windows fogging up 15 seconds down the road.

Candle under a terra Cotta flower pot is not an effective heater. Law of thermodynamics or something. Basically, candle makes little fire. Little fire make little heat. Flower pot is just a flower pot. Need big fire big heat.

Something I would like to add is that local libraries are normally happy to let you spend the day indoors quietly reading and most have a direct pipeline to various social safety nets to try and find you shelter. Local churches frequently also have similar resources, and rarely you may find an actually helpful policeman who will help you with a voucher or something.

Tricks for ice driving from a canadian – when you're driving on ice, and you start spinning out, do NOT look where you're going. Look where you wanna go. The explanation I've heard is that there's a subtle correction you brain does to aim your motion towards where you're looking, but that's probably false – that said I've had a lot of close calls and looking where you want to go helps.
Also, if you have a choice, do not brake on ice. Just let go of the gas and let friction slow you down. as long as the wheels are rolling in line with your speed, you have some control – but if you lock them and start sliding, that's usually where you start swerving back and forth with the overcorrections. Obviously if you need to brake, brake, but it's probably safer to swerve around an obstacle than brake if that's an option.

Fish net vest between layers to create air pockets, they got kinda expensive in some countries after 2000, but they are really good.
