I’m the same with all bands. There’s only so many times you need to hear certain songs or albums before you realise there’s a whole world of music you’re ignoring just listen to the same song for twenty millionth time and listening to it is leaving you cold.

I own every album on the list… except the Green Day one, never cared about them. I still play all of them on vinyl or CD, maybe not as often.
For me in this world of musical quick fix that streaming provides I think its wonderful to take a little time to listen to great, memorable albums like these.

The trouble with most pop 'n' rock is its shallowness and lack of sophistication. There's only so many sonic textures and permutations that can be achieved using the limited range of instrumentation. After a certain number of listens there's nothing new to discover in it and it becomes boring – unless of course a certain track or album is able to trigger a vivid memory or intense emotion. Only the very best exponents of the genre are able to transcend this inherent defect.
I once went to a concert at my students' union in the early 70s, where four different acts were on the bill. I came away from it thinking jeez, that was a load of nothing. Apart from that great one-man blues band, the now-forgotten Duster Bennett, none of the groups, some of them quite well-known, seemed to have any original ideas or sounds to offer.
If the music develops more depth and/or complexity, though, it isn't pop or rock any more, but something different. I don't think there's any solution to the conundrum.

Not all of those albums are ones that I ever wanted to own. Having said that, I find the trick to not getting burned out on albums is for me to play albums in rotation. It takes me a couple of years to hear all of my albums and listen to an album again. I do have some I never listen to, but that is because they aren't very good, not because I have heard them too much already. I also have albums that I mostly listen to in the car because that way I don't sit through the whole thing all at once. I can't say that there are any albums I once considered good, that I never want to hear again.

U2's The Joshua Tree. The album was fine, but it marks their calamitous fall off a cliff for me. U2 peaked in 1984 and I'm still not over the mountain of crap they put out after that.

I basically agree with the list, apart from Rumours, which I still listen to. I was a huge REM fan in the 80s and 90s, but don't listen to them at all now. Never been a big fan of Hotel California and have always The Eagles to be somewhat overrated. Shoot out the Lights is a phenomenal album, one of the best albums of the 80s in my view.

I'm getting deja vu here, think i seen this one before. So may have already said this but i used to like RHCP until i seen them live, dullest band ever so now can't listen to any of their albums. And anything past Killers for Iron Maiden is a no for me, can't stand that air raid siren voice.

As much as it is considered culturally iconic, Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band was the least listened to album in my Beatles record collection. Too much waffle to sit through just to get to A Day in the Life.

Agreed on rumours. It probably was Fleetwood Mac’s best album but I don’t listen to it much. It’s overplayed. I liked don’t stop the first 1000 times I heard it. And I lost interest in their personal drama the second time I heard it. Mick fleetwood has been flogging that dead horse for nearly 50 years to anyone who will pay to listen. Their honking and bonking is nothing to be proud of. I much prefer to listen to the white album. You get the same harmonies without all the distractions. For the same reason I’ll listen to off the wall before thriller and rubber soul before pepper.

I fkn hate Rumours. To me it’s not Fleetwood Mac. It’s too much of a pop record and the band turned into that too.

I liked REM. I got sick of ‘everybody hurts’ and ‘man on the moon’ though. The rest of the album was absolutely stellar.

The issue is that they are always over-played and you never hear anything else from each band on FM radio. The radio programmers since the mid-eighties just rely on those particular songs and never delve into the band's other songs on other albums. It wasn't that way in the seventies where FM radio DJ's would play obscure songs from other albums. The money grabbers do just that. It's a f*cking shame!!!

I can do without REM and I never had it. Same for Green Day, never had it don't want it. Well damn, I think the only album of these I owned was Back In Black. I think it was a 4 or 5 album set of AC/DC cds my son bought me. Rumours, my sister played that nonstop, the radio played it nonstop, and where I worked played it nonstop. I was tired of that album back in 1977.

There are 2 reasons for me that I'll never listen to EXCELLENT albums! 1: Played to DEATH. Nirvana's Nevermind is the only one in this catagory for me. Blood Sugar Sex Magic got real close but I can still put it on from time to time (measured in years) and enjoy it. 2: the recording of the instruments (vox included) rubs me the wrong way. Slint's Spiderland – which is a masterpiece from a musical perspective – sounds horrible. The guitars in particular sound like they were recorded straight to the desk from the guitar lead (direct input). I can't stand it, even though I love the music.
There are some albums that lose their shine as you discover how derivative they are (hello Nirvana) or the only good songs are the hits and the albums aren't worth listening to on the whole but they get downgraded in my mind from Excellent to just good or lower.

I have to agree with most of your selections, but not all. The real takeaway is sad for me; many albums and their top tracks have been overplayed to the point of allergic reaction. However, I found that after a healthy distance from certain bands or albums, I was able to come back to them in time (I'm thinking of Led Zeppelin IV).

GnR's Appetite For Destruction. Don't get me wrong, a fantastic album. But half the songs been played to death (no fault of its own, of course) and I don't skip songs on an album.
But I can listen to Use Your Illusion 1 and 2 non-stop at work, so go figure .

Aside from “Longview,” Green Day is simply unpleasant. And entirely phony.

This guilty ennui of supposed classics is part of the ageing process my friend and we all have it. I always hated Bat Out of Hell anyway because a good friend of mine loved it just a little too much at the time. 😊

A very odd concept for a list: albums you've liked so much, you never want to hear them again. Not a principle you'd want to apply elsewhere. Like, say, with coffee.
