21st Century Sultan: Why Turkey Keeps Choosing Erdoğan | ENDEVR Documentary

The greatest challenge to his leadership in decades. After ruling with an iron fist for over twenty years, Recep Tayyip Erdogan faces a historic run-off election. Mismanagement of the catastrophic February 6 earthquake in 2023—which killed nearly 45,000 people—exposed rampant corruption in a construction sector that ignored vital safety standards. Erdogan’s brutal policies blend nationalism, economic liberalism, and intense re-Islamization, highlighted by building 14,000 mosques and fostering a booming “Islamic fashion” industry promoted by top influencers. To secure absolute power, he has ruthlessly crushed dissent.

Ranked among the world’s most repressive nations for press freedom, eighty-nine journalists have been jailed since 2016, while brave reporters face hundreds of years in prison for exposing state secrets. This documentary journeys deep inside a fractured Turkey, torn between submission and resistance.

This documentary is from 2025

the only real problem i saw here was the religization of the state , the state should never choose a certain religion because eventually it is bound to be biased and unfair . if we are paying equal taxes why has the state not built a church for me the same way it has built a mosque for you .

The narrator seemed to blame Erdoğa for the earthquake, and every building that collapsed in it—including those built during Roman times. Now that’s what I call “objective” investigation.

I can tell you that Erdoğan is not the root of the problem. Even if he were gone tomorrow, the underlying issues would remain. Modern Turkish national identity has, to a significant extent, been built around denying or reinterpreting painful chapters of history. That doesn’t disappear with a change in leadership.

You can even see this reflected in the documentary, where people who oppose Erdoğan still glorify the same authoritarian and violent historical narratives that helped shape their national identity. It extends all the way down to young children, illustrating how deeply these ideas can become embedded across generations.

Once the current system eventually loosens its grip, one of two things is likely to happen: either another authoritarian figure fills the vacuum, or the country goes through a period of instability as people begin asking difficult questions about their government and their history.

A good comaprion is Russia. Putin is as much a symptom as he is a cause. The deeper issue is the political culture and the societal attitudes that enabled and sustained his rule in the first place, same logic with Turkey.
