I'm a little late to this, but I just went to Chance's show in Boston a couple days ago and I genuinely adore Star Line now.

I think with Chance's best stuff, he captures an energy. In Acid Rap, he bottled the trippy, acrid, zany energy that came with the early 2010s. In Coloring Book, he captured the pure, joyous high that America was on at the tail-end of the Obama era in what I think is one of the most technically great and emotionally pure albums of the 2010s. And now, with Star Line, I think Chance delivers on something that is so incredibly necessary in music right now, and something I felt was missing with some of the music of the past year.

I think Chance felt it a lot earlier than the rest of America, but in the last few years it feels like the spirit of America has been beat down again and again and again, especially in Black and marginalized communities. I think Chance has his finger on the pulse of America with Star Line. He delivers a call to action across so many songs, calling us to stand on what we believe and stand up for the people that make our lives better every day. He stands against ICE and the atrocities and bigoted acts of the current administration in a genuine, overt way not many artists have dared to step.

At the same time, I think Chance captures a hope and optimism about the future that we so desperately need right now. It's not exactly the blind, absolute positivity that was pervasive on Coloring Book, but Chance communicates that the world can get better, and that we have an active and meaningful role to play in that. The ethereal synths and keys throughout the album contribute to that, but I think there's a lot of tasteful sampling that radiates an uplifting energy.

I don't think Star Line is perfect, but I think it's a beacon in a time of ever-encroaching darkness, and as someone who has loved Chance's stuff for years I truly and honestly believe his fans and the industry at large will look back on this project with fondness and appreciation for what he's managed to create after such a low in his personal and professional story.

Little bit of glazing going on here but the album was solid no doubt. The bar was set pretty low cause the big day was extra mid but I think he delivered as far as a comeback. Pales in comparison to the drops from Kendrick, Clipse, JID, pretty much all of the Griselda drops lol this year was stacked with straight bangers. I’d give the album a respectable 7, and coming back from that massive L he took in 2019 and that’s honestly more than any of us could have expected. Makes me excited to see what he does next but this is far from a classic

…also peak Chance was pretty damn good on SNL with the butt batteries and snacks.

3333 was a smelling salt for me. Still listen to it often. I haven’t found anything on Star Line as interesting as what was probably just a little Denny’s napkin exercise they found a cool little beat for. But I’ll keep spinnng.

I found Big Day messy and forgettable, but not catastrophic like so much of the Internet. I did want more myself from the guy that sampled Beirut, but c’mon Anthony Spamtano.
