Sasquatch. Bigfoot. Yeti. The Wild Men of the Woods. Yowlies. On almost every continent and almost every state, people tell legends of a hairy ape man in the wilderness. The ubiquity of these sightings – and the life-changing experience that often comes from it – beg for the subject to be taken seriously. Even though actual evidence of their existence never seems to materialize. Today I talk with Laura Krantz, creator of the Wild Thing podcast, to share her favorite story of a bigfoot encounter. The one that really makes her wonder, despite all the odds… Could bigfoot be real?

This is my dad's unexplained 'bigfoot' story.

In the 70s he and his friends used to hunt raccoons and bears with dogs. Basically you would send a pack(4-8) hound dogs into the woods. They would find a raccoon or bear and tree it(chase it up a tree), and then bark until the hunters would show up and they would shoot the bear/raccoon. I hate the idea of killing animals like this, but it was a different time and common for the area I grew up in. The dogs they used were trained to be fearless. They would literally fight a bear and my dad and friends/family lost dogs to bears. These dogs would not hesitate to attack anything they found in the woods.

One night my dad and some friends were raccoon hunting. They sent their dogs out into the woods to find some raccoons. They heard the dogs start barking like they found something. Then all the dogs started yipping with fear and all came running out of the woods and would not go back in.

No one saw anything, but they were all freaked out because these dogs had no fear of anything they had ever encountered. But something in the woods that night scared these dogs so bad they ran away and wouldn't go back.

Who knows what these dogs encountered, but this was the only time my dad or his hunting partners ever experienced their dogs being afraid of something in the woods.

My opinion on Bigfoot is the same as it is on all these other stories like it. I don’t buy it but I’d be thrilled to be proven wrong. I’d love to believe, I just haven’t been presented with the kind of evidence that could convince me.

K, only 15 minutes in where the more supernatural explanations are being firmly placed off the table. But I have to say that that approach is not doing justice to science itself. What that is is the philosophy of materialism in science. If, as a scientist, one says “I will follow all evidence, except evidence that doesn’t already confirm my broader world view” then that is where their science will be limited. I would argue that a bit more agnosticism in science would go a long way in understanding phenomena that don’t seem to be materialistic in nature, and heck, maybe some of the supernatural phenomena studied in that more open minded perspective would turn out to have fascinating material correlatives. Just saying. Like, cause it could be a spirit. And if it actually were, then no amount of materialistic investigation will result in the evidence required for a materialistic framework. Just saying.

whyd someone want to believe in unproven thing? Is it feels good?
I'm a grown up in my mid 30s, still trying to understand pro and con of believing/wanting something to be true toward a paranormal/supernatural/extraordinary stuff. For example how does it feel if the pyramids turns out to be actually built by extraterrestrial beings? For me, nothing at all…. Just a new archive in the collective pool of human knowledge aka natural science. But it seems, some people's wants reach to the point of extreme that they started to make up things, force their minds into believing in something that hasnt even proven or even has a way to observe let alone field test or experiment. For example we can observed the planet and star as a mare citizen simply with a telescope… You don't need to be a nasa scientist or president or dictator to observe the fact that there are planets circulating around the solar system in a predictable ways. You just need a telescope and a notebook and a pen. But, why the "aliens build pyramids" when there are far more plausible explanations which are reproduciable? Same for thr ghosts… Why? I mean if they are real and observable it'll happen eventually, but why the urge of "wanting others to believe in ghosts and paranormal" alongside you? That's a very prominent psychological trait in all the conspiracy people and paranormal believers. That's why i wonder is it feels good? to believe or wanting a extraordinary thing to be true? I meam even there are countless things to research and study in just a single branch of natural science, why even jump to those shaky subject? Afterall ….

man, why is the question i have. I assume it is the drama that's making people wants* something out of norm turns out to be true. Drama is such a thing. But then why wouldnt i seek drama? Id rather believe in proven fact that's norm than something that's dramatic yet almost impossible to be real. Because imagine believing in something that's objectively false in your dead bed 😬😬 eeee that'd be one of the scariest things I've to endured. Ultra scary. Id rather brain dead than wanting* something that's not true to be true.I mean when you start with a drive/bias before even applying scientific methods, you're failed before even begin because conformation bias will lean you to certain result. I want to be a plain sheet until the results, that includes big foot and whatnot. So far, theres no definitive answer they exist… not so different to loch ness monster and ghosts. Rumours and sightings happen, yet zero evident and reproducibiity. Why even spend your energy in something when you can't reproduce for your peer for the sake of lab experiment and observation? That's a loss cause.
Anyway, Bigfoot exist or not exist, doesn't matter… What matters is what is the truth, and so far, not existing is.

P.S i still wonder if it's feel good to be in belief of something not provable or out of normal realm. Is it? How s the feeling of absolutely believing ghosts exist along is going about their daily chores?

10:05 completely disagree. Go hiking in Appalachia for a bit. Not saying a Sasquatch, but people go missing all the time just because we underestimate how remote places still are

Does Bigfoot poop in the woods? Bag up all of the poop around the vicinity where you just filmed it. Send it off to the lab. If it is from Bigfoot, there will be unexpected results in the lab analysis. Case closed.

It doesn't seem so implausable to me that something like an American gorilla could exist, but I find it incredibly hard to believe that these animals wouldn't be caught on hundreds of cameras by now we have cheap HD infrared game cameras and thousands of motivated people to find them. I honestly think that these sightings when real, were either people seeing bears or even other people.

I don’t think their out there but some part of me wishes they were. I think it’s fun to have spooky stories that raise the hair on the back of your neck. My wife and I watched a B movie titled something like The Legend Of The Boggy Creek Monster, it was scary and great fun.

I’ve always thought the one on the trail cam that looks exactly like a chimp is probably just a chimp, assuming a totally real Bigfoot, I’d imagine running into somebodies escaped pet chimp would still be more likely.

So…. I'm an archaeologist and I prefer to use science and common sense above everything else. Occam's razor. That being said, about 5 years ago, I stumbled upon Les Stroud's Bigfoot series filmed after he had his own experience. I love Stroud and really appreciate his no-nonsense true approach to filming so I was intrigued by this and started watching the series. I'm a nature enthusiast and I spend a lot of time outdoors, especially with work. I'm not a nature expert, but I did grow up in the area and spent much of my free time hiking at the local area. Stroud had mentioned that even Jane Goodall had considered the fact it was possible that a humanoid like primate may exist in North America which really had me wondering and, at the time, I wanted to hear more experts on the subject. Prior I had never considered Bigfoot to be real and had never really even been interested in Bigfoot. That changed one night sitting at my PC in my home office at 2 am gaming. I live in rural southern TN in a small community with very few neighbors spaced pretty far apart. That night I started hearing this deep guttural growl outside my window while I was seated at my PC gaming. I assumed it was my cat outside, who sometimes would get up underneath the house and fight with the neighborhood stray. I ignored it, but the growl started getting louder and no longer muffled. Eventually the growl either stopped or turned into what I can only define as this frantic low to high cow mooing. At this point I didn't know what the hell was going on, especially as it sounded like it was right outside my window. I thought maybe one of my neighbors cows down the road had gotten out and was facing off with my cat so I decided that I'd run out and save my cat. I jumped to my feet and happened to glance at my window, which had its curtains open only to see two luminescent eyes staring at me. The eyes were rather side glance, like this thing had been walking past the window and caught me out of the corner of its eye and stopped. We stared each other for about 2 seconds and I saw the creature basically turn and glide past the window. For whatever reason, my brain didn't identify that the eyes were glowing and my initial thought in horror was that it was a peeping Tom, a person. I thought that maybe my kids might have been playing a joke on me as it was a Friday night only to find out that all my kids were asleep. The next morning I checked for footprints and ended up measuring where I saw the eyes on the window pane. Only to find that whatever it was would have measured at least 6 ft tall IF It was standing flush against the window pane which it was not because I have an AC box unit at that window. Whatever it was may have measured higher.

I have gone through everything. The weather conditions. Reviewed all sorts of animal sounds. Considered the possibility of it being lightning bugs (This happened in early April and the weather conditions at 2:00 a.m. were around 42°). I cannot figure out any possibility for something that stood that tall, that made those sounds. I have considered possibly a mix of factors contributing to something that I attributed to be one thing, but I still can't explain the eyes. The only thing I can assume is that maybe we had a black bear in the area. We have not had black bears in our county for over 100 years, however, several years after my experience surrounding counties have identified sightings. That being said, that's still one very very tall black bear that would have been walking on its back two legs that I'm pretty sure my neighbors would have seen as my neighbors are agricultural farmers and horse ranchers, basically folks who spend a lot of time outside. We haven't had any sightings, not even in the past few years since my experience.

My issues have not stopped here. My son was approached by something in the tree line behind the house one night that sounded like, what he explained to be, a fairly large creature breathing extremely heavy with a lung sucking death rattle sound that started to approached him while he was jumping off his car one. He didn't see what it was but rather jumped in his car and drove away from fear. A couple years later he had moved into a camper in the backyard while he was in college to have some independence but still keep his bills low. The second night he moved into his camper, something hit his camper hard. He checked the next morning for tree limbs or anything that might have fallen and found nothing. Later, him and his fiance had experienced something rubbing up against the side of the camper one night I say laid in bed watching TV, followed by three tree knocks right behind the camper. He had jumped up with his shotgun to see who was outside only to find nothing. It was at this point that he installed a camera and we haven't had any other issues.

I'm not saying our experiences are Bigfoot. I do find it incredibly uncanny that our experiences however match other people's experiences, situations I was not aware of till I started doing my own research. I ended up getting a good laugh when I eventually found out that our county was known for a cluster of sightings in the late '70s and early '80s known as the Flintville Monster. I reported to the BFRO, and part of our stories are incorporated into what is now known as the Elk River cluster. I've also spoken with Moneymaker, who contacted me personally for an interview who said that our experiences were textbook. Now I know that what I heard outside my window sounded rather similar to what is known as the Ohio River call, but in my case the octaves went higher and lower.

I've lived in this house for over 12 years and I've never had any issues until the past three or four. I find it credibly uncanny that about the time that I started reviewing Stroud's Bigfoot series on TV I had this happen. The irony is not lost on me, as if this creature wanted to let me know that in fact it did exist. For those that care, I do not partake in any form of drugs and I do not drink. I actually have a clearance to work with the US government for my job and have reported my story anonymously for this reason. Do I believe in Bigfoot? At this time I have no concrete proof but I am open to the idea. I do have to say that my experience eats at me and I regret not further pursuing what was lurking at my window that night because the unknown doesn't mesh well with my scientific brain. I keep saying there has to be some sort of logic reasoning for our experiences, but at this time I still have yet to find them. We've also have had lights and orbs in and around our property which really gets into the woo-woo which I am not good with because that kind of exceeds scientific reason and makes me feel like I'm losing my mind. I drive on data rather than paranormal, but our situations do make me understand how others could perceive Bigfoot encounters…. Or ghosts and aliens. The human mind is a funny thing, without logic, it creates scenarios and reasoning.

When I lived in extremely rural northern IN, I saw a 'hunter' a number of times that was probably a bigfoot. I only ever saw him for a second or two at most at a time, but I'd see him as he was going down into the creek bed, or a few hours later returning, sometimes while carrying a deer over his shoulders. He always looked, from about 1/5th mile away where I lived, to my eyes like a hunter in brown camo, with a fluffy hat on. But eventually I started realizing he didn't have a truck nearby, and was taking those deer back to a place there weren't any houses. Eventually I walked down to where he lowered himself into the creek, I'd seen him do it a number of times, he'd reach up and grab this big limb, and lower himself down. I'm 6'2, that limb was over a foot above my arm's reach. Jumping I barely could tap it, not even get my hand around it. He lowered himself down, using it for a support, I'd seen him do it from afar a dozen times. In that moment I was like "oh, you're not human, are you?", and then realized that I'd been watching a bigfoot. I don't have any other explanation.

A large, upright, fur‑covered primate not bent over a bit like some primates. Either you are upright or fur covered, once you are upright you build shelters and construct body coverings. The nest are from hoaxers or overnight shelter builders, building a lean-to with cut branches and spending the night in winter is all over the place. A remote piece of public or private land, even more remote in the winter, they go there and experiment with shelters.
