Carolco Pictures:The Studio That Bought the ’90s… Then Lost Everything
Carolco Pictures was the studio behind some of the biggest, loudest, most unforgettable movies of the late ’80s and early ’90s — Rambo: First Blood Part II, Total Recall, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Basic Instinct, and Cliffhanger. For a while, Carolco looked like the future of Hollywood: an independent studio taking massive swings, selling blockbusters around the world before they were even made, and proving that outsiders could beat the major studios at their own game.
But behind the explosions, movie stars, and record-breaking box office numbers, Carolco was quietly falling apart.
In this video, we look at the rise and collapse of Carolco Pictures — the ambitious studio built by Mario Kassar and Andrew Vajna, the financial model that helped create the modern blockbuster era, and the massive warning signs that appeared long before Cutthroat Island hit theaters. Tri-mark , Orion , Carolco ,New world, New Line have always been the underdogs in entertainment just in my opinion but they are my studios 👍👍💯💯

Carolco was Cannon but with actual big hit. I love love cannon films too though. Red Heat is a favorite. The “ hey asshole” scene cracks me up. Saw basic instinct as a 14 year old horny kid so of course I was in love with Sharon stone and Jeanine triple horn. Carol o was awesome. Took a date to T2 and that’s where she held my hand for the first time so that’s special.

Same here, T2 was my first Carolco film I ever saw on good old VHS. I reckon if broadband Internet and crowd funding existed in the 80s & 90s back then, I reckon not only Carolco but Cannon, New Line Cinema, TriStar, New World Pictures, DEG, Avco Embassy & Orion Pictures etc would probably still all be in business operating independently and not being owned & beholding to any megacorporate consolidated parent entity

Hey! Kinda weird to ask, but why are a fair amount of the pronunciations wrong? I really want to believe it's just a fluke, however the dialogue is getting more and more AI- esque. Sorry for that 🙁

It was Total Recall. My Mom took me to see it in June 1990, when I was a young teenager. T2, Red Heat, Universal Soldier, and even Jacob's Ladder are all favorites. It seems this studio did what Cannon Films badly tried to do, and succeeded; selling rights before any picture was done.

Terminator 2: my all-time favorite movie. Total Recall: sci-fi action classic. Cutthroat Island: rock-solid old-school adventure film, pure popcorn entertainment, just released at the wrong time.

Rambo III was the first Carolco film I saw as a little kid and that jingle by Jerry Goldsmith gave me goosebumps. Then came Total Recall, T2, and Basic Instinct – which made Carolco my favorite studio making big films I was too young to watch when I did. I really wish Crusade could have gotten made when it was on the table.

one fact about T2 is that Carolco only play 1/3 of the production since much of money was givin to James Cameron under his Lightstorm Entertainment,
