The Other American Colonies They Don’t Teach You About

PBS Origins | May 23, 2026

We’ve been learning about the 13 colonies all our lives, so why did no one think to mention the British Caribbean colonies? And why didn’t these colonies join the American Revolution? The answer has a lot to do with slavery.

Thank you for a good documentary about the Caribbean colonies role during the American independence war.
A sentence about how even the British Empire in modern day India-Pakistan-Bangladesh was also impacted during the American independence war should be briefly mentioned. The British had to increase forces there to quell Tipu Sultan’s valiant independence attempt, and this helped the rebel 13 colonies of the Americans here battle lower number of British troops.
France also had a role in helping the anti-British sides (Tipu Sultan and George Washington) in both these wars.
Global events are connected and the outcomes could’ve been different depending on how the British empire & parliament decided to use their military resources.

As an Argentinian you can't possibly imagine how happy I am that my country has such an insignificant percentage of Negroes. I applaud our statesmen for understanding the necessity of building a nation with people of European heritage.

This leaves out the story of Haiti, which was the first successful rebellion of enslaved people and directly affected many of the events that are discussed here. That is a big omission.

No the team needs to rely on themselves should he gets injured during the playoffs actually I would actually have my options being 1st option Bridges 2nd Option OG 3rd option Hart strictly from a 2 Way play point of view this way Hart would handle PG responsibilities and Brunson can simply be a 2 Guard during the playoffs as a 4th 1st option to score and KAT to fall all the way back be a true 5th option that way no pressure and he can with his Dribble Drive motion offense can get more Triple Doubles low scoring more efficient less turn overs more availability on Defense games like he had the other day against The Grizzlies and utilize our Bench more effectively buy using the best players available and not go by routine and utilize the entire team down the stretch of these Playoffs our strength is many guards utilize them to the point if KAT or Mitch or OG to then formulate a plan with Diawara at C Bridges at PF Hart SF Brunson SG Alvarado PG bench Hukporti Shamet Clarkson McBride Kolek and win a game or possibly a series

The new nation of the USA were only connected to the other colonies by trade only. For the other colonies had to rebelled to unite with the USA. They were controlled by a smaller elite and merchant group which wanted nothing with the Northern colonies outside trade and there were more slaves than them and they were controlled by the British Army.

Only interests is slavery always. Why can’t anyone bring up the genocide of the indigenous inhabitants of the Caribbean islands who were neither Black or White, European or African. When a genocide is successful no one talks about it but it is part of the history of the Americas that no one teaches.

Sis sez the Brits “gave NO reparations” to slaves. Sis. Get your context right. Look what France did w Haiti: the SLAVES paid reparations. Note how it DIDNT WORK. Keep your 21st Century framing out of it. Ending slavery ain’t about moral purity.

8:43 when you admire the beautifully complex jewelry and lives of Princess Diana's family and whose grandmothers and drag community alike belove the white cleopatra Elizabeth Taylor's collection, just remember your values. 11:55

"Britnin lost fighting the ideals of freedom, happynes and justice for all". They were fighting american cololists and each nation had slaves. America was not freer in culture as anywhere else at the time. The british slave abolisits won in cour against the govermetn at the time, they were not doing it to improve pr after loseing some of thire colinees in america. I love PBS have been a fan for a long time, but i will say this one came across really america good britan bad. Really biased in the frameing of the whole topic and the whole trying to win good pr from fighting ideals… that's just modern propaganda historical revisionism. Please do better on your next topic.

Hey PBS: Should have just had the writer, Tien Nguyen, read this piece.
Host has no idea what they are reading. Lots of wrong pronunciations, weird emphases, odd dramatizations… You can tell they are just reading the words one by one without understanding what's to be communicated.

2:15 Important point to add: people weren't angry at the Stamp Act because of the cost of the tax, and they were only mildly angry at the imposition of a tax in the first place.

What really made people angry about the Stamp Act was that it granted government officials the freedom to examine all of your personal papers in order to verify that stamps were present.

This was a massive violation of privacy.

This is why John Adams stated that the American Revolution began with the enactment of the Writs of Assistance, which was the act that gave British soldiers the authority to search through people's personal papers and effects.

How come you only emphasize the word white we're talking about slave owners? Why don't you emphasize black with black slave owners or The other races that owned slaves? White Europeans were not the only people to own slaves or profit from it, the entire world did and you only emphasize white ones. White Europeans were the first civilization in history to abolish slavery and actively fight to make others abolish it as well yet you emphasize the word white like it's a curse word
