REPORTERS AGAINST POWER — Myanmar | Journalism, Democracy & the Fight for Truth

What happens when telling the truth can put a journalist in prison?

In this episode of Reporters Against Power, we travel to Myanmar during a historic election, where independent journalists and citizen reporters risk their safety to document political change, government abuses, ethnic conflict, and threats to democracy.

At the center of the story is the Democratic Voice of Burma (DVB), a small but powerful independent news organization operating under enormous pressure. Using smartphones, social media, citizen journalists, and innovative broadcasting technology, DVB creates a nationwide network capable of reporting events almost as they happen.

The documentary explores:

• The struggle for press freedom in Myanmar
• Journalists working under government pressure and censorship
• How DVB used citizen journalism during the elections
• The risks faced by reporters covering ethnic and religious conflict
• The persecution and displacement of the Rohingya Muslim population
• Buddhist nationalism and the rise of anti-Muslim sentiment
• The relationship between journalism, democracy, and accountability
• Why winning an election does not necessarily solve a country’s deepest conflicts

As Aung San Suu Kyi’s NLD moves toward a historic electoral victory, a larger question remains: Can democracy survive without a free and independent press?

For the journalists of DVB, reporting is more than a profession. It is a way of challenging power, documenting history, and giving ordinary people a voice.

Reporters Against Power explores the journalists around the world who work on the front lines of democracy, often at extraordinary personal risk.

I don't support genocide obviously. I do understand though why there is global intolerance for Islam, based on what we're seeing happening in Europe right now. Their scriptures tell them to lie, manipulate and deceive non-Muslims. Then when their numbers are high enough, they take over whole countries with Shariah law. That's what the crusades were about, stopping Islam from taking over Europe.

Islam should not be given sociopolitical equality in any nation that values actual equality and freedom. Sounds contradictory doesn't it? But it's not. You can't tolerate bigotry if you want people to remain safe. Radical Islam and Shariah law are a cancer.

Wait a sec…you're calling the Buddhists (who are in their own country) 'terrorists'. But you're making the muslims out to be the victims?? You're an idiot. If they dont want Islam in their country, they have the right to run them out.

What an absolutely disinengous title. Why is it, when they move into other countries, and after they get majority control, turned into a complete child marrying, goat snuggling, sh*thole within 10 years? And why is it when the indigenous population fights back we're picking on the the ReLIgIoN Of PEaCe?
The fact that Buddhists, monks and laypeople, have been provoked to the point of violence should wake people up.

90% of terror organizations in SEA (same story for the rest of the world) are islamic. In Thailand, during the month of August, had 78 bombings and arson attacks carried out by muslims. So spare me the sympathy and ask the real question; "Why are the biggest terrorists orgs are of islamic origin?"
