It sounds too crazy to be true, but at the beginning of World War 2, a crazy idea was hatched. What if we strapped bombs to bats? The idea is they would roost in attics and crawlspaces all over Tokyo and then set the whole city on fire. Believe it or not, this was tested for years, at the cost of millions before being shelved. But here’s the craziest bit… It could have worked.

    No sh*t!

I just made custom rock paper scissors dice today. D6, the 2x bats beat the 2x incendiary grenades which beat the 2x windmills which obv beat the 2x bats, so on and so forth 😢😇🎲

The hybernation was also integral to the function as the bats would otherwise have axphyxiated at high altitude in trinsit iin the unpressurized bomb bays of B-29s.

The US had a fair bit more success in plausible ideas of weaponizing animals during WWII than the Germans or Soviets.

Some historians and engineers have argued the Bat Bomb would've been the weapons to end the war in the pacific (and prevent the need for the horrific prospect of an invasion of Japan) had it not been for the Atomic bombings doing that first.

There's the pidgeon guided anti-shipping bomb they developed during WWII, as well … directly related to the ASM-N-2 Bat radar guided bomb. (which did not use Bats … or Gary Burghoff)

This make me wonder if they came up with the Tokyo fire bombings off this idea. Those killed more people than the nukes in a single night. The radiation is what caused the added deaths over time.

Isn't this kinda what Olga of Kiev did? Supposedly, the village/city that killed her husband (split in twain by two trees) surrendered when she brought an army to them and she demanded that all the prominent households give her a bird they used for messages. She later released those birds carrying some kind of flaming material and they returned to their homes to roost setting them on fire.

I'm probably skimming over details or getting things a little wrong. Admittedly, my only source for this info is Puppet History's episode on her lol (which I know isn't a source).

While I appreciate your thoroughness in describing the design of the bomb mechanism, I have to point out that at no point prior had I had any concern, whatsoever, that the US military would be able to make the bomb for Project XRay. Getting an appropriately fused incindiary is clearly the low-hanging fruit of this project.

I don't see the point of using bats. They could have just dropped a bunch of little incendiary bombs all over the place, which would have landed on the paper structures and started fires.

I heard a story of a bear that fought with some troops during WWII, and it did various things that the soldiers trained it to do, including basically being an "ammo supply bear" where it would run along the front lines of a skirmish and provide ammo crates to the soldiers

@JoeScott Are you just going through old episodes of Dark Matters: Twisted But True television show? You have covered a bunch of their old topics, including this one. Are you doing this on purpose, or is this just a coincidence?
