Ladies Fancy Shawl, often called Northern Shawl, is the newest and most athletic form of Native American women’s dance, originating among Northern tribes along the U.S.–Canadian border. Similar in energy and color to the men’s Fancy Dance, it features fast footwork, jumping, and spinning movements that symbolize butterflies in flight. The regalia emphasizes elaborately decorated shawls worn over the shoulders, adorned with appliqué, ribbon work, paint, and long flowing fringe, complemented by a beaded cape that completes the vibrant, graceful presentation.
