Grass Dancing originated as a warrior society dance and has evolved into a highly competitive northern dance style distinguished by its energetic, swinging movement and feather-minimal regalia. Aside from a porcupine-hair roach, the outfit contains no bustles and is designed to complement the dance through motion created by fringe and ribbons. The regalia typically includes a shirt and trousers, beaded belt with side drops, armbands, cuffs, chokers, aprons, and matching moccasins and headband, with beadwork often featuring hearts, rosettes, and playing-card motifs. Front and back aprons, especially the ribbon-laden back apron, are central visual elements, along with large beaded cuffs, harnesses, and coordinated beadwork throughout. Ankle bells are worn, and dancers commonly carry fans, whistles, mirror boards, or dance hoops.
