Cazzie David | Spiritually a Boomer | Mike Birbiglia’s Working It Out

Mike Birbiglia | March 27, 2026

Mike welcomes author, actor, and filmmaker Cazzie David to the podcast and right away, Mike challenges the notoriously misanthropic Cazzie to list five things she loves. It takes a while. Then, Cazzie breaks down her new book of essays, Delusions, which she says her mom found “disturbing,” and Cazzie talks about co-directing the indie film I Love You Forever. Plus, Cazzie’s close call with a rabid bobcat, and why Mike wants his journals burned after he dies.

I got introduced to Cazzie through her first book, which I bought on audible and I highly recommend. But be prepared to be filled with an overwhelming desire to just give this poor woman a hug!

Her deal breaker: You can't look through my phone. But, I can look through your journal. Um, no, that's not right. and also: Who cares? so toxic and unfunny. She would be boring her co-workers at Zara if she wasn't the child of rich and powerful parents. Typical American un-exceptionalism. Mike gets points for persisting and staying positive.

"Disturbing" has changed so much since I was a kid. In the 80s/90s, a sketchbook full of daggers, skulls, and the like could get you convicted of premeditated murder, but nowadays, a T-shirt covered in cartoonish daggers and skulls might be considered cute, paired with a red hair ribbon, some ripped jeans, and a pair of Converse sneakers.

What you enjoy about the Gilmore Girls is that it's mostly episodic. Whatever happens you will return to the status quo by the time the next episodes comes around. It's something we've lost in the last 15 years or so of television. Everything good has to be serialized to such degree that you can't skip an episode now, and while that is great for some stories, sometimes I just want a story that gets resolved within the hour so I don't feel like a junkie all week waiting for that next injection of The Pitt!

I've only recently learned about the existence of Cazzie David and I think her sharpness is such a joy to watch. I could listen to her have smart, subdued insights into her own insecurities and her place in the world forever. I can't wait to be her biggest fan.
