Even my beloved hometown Summerfest is no longer 10 straight days of music. It now only operates on weekends. Those weekday, midday, late night concerts were where you saw local, independent, and newer artist from around the country. You got to see them for free in a fun, safe environment on the Lakefront. The big acts still played on weekends, but you could still hear all kinds of great music for free.

As I’ve gotten older, I prefer just buying individual concert tickets to support the artists I really want to see. Sometimes a bummer to be in a crowd to see an artist you love but half the people there don’t care about the music and just want to party and talk over the set. Much more fun to be surrounded by actual fans

Hamilton Ontario Canada has had Festivsl of Friends music fest for 49 years! It’s mostly a music festival and lately has become more kid/family friendly – they even have a midway set up. Volunteer run. Usually pretty good.

My first time watching you and I enjoyed this documentary! Great job of honoring your sponsor and posing a thought piece.

To answer your question, I can’t remember the last time I went to a festival. I’ll agree with you… I think those of us tired of the noise of Coachella for instance are niching down to find our folk.

Oh, my last shows were Hiatus Kaiyote and Kokoroko and man was I grateful for the respectful, vibey, of-age crowds.

My main objection to large festivals are that they are catered toward the rich or the middle class who are prepared to fork out and go to a festival, where you sleep in a tent on the muddy floor.

The idea of music festivals becoming likelier to succeed if they scale down and cater to communities is something I’m seeing in the art event scene, as well! I loved that you showed various perspectives from the community in this video 🙂
