A former self-described bird hater puts her fear to the ultimate test at Alveus Sanctuary, where founder Maya Higa walks her through a gauntlet of increasingly intimidating birds starting with Polly Pocket the fluffy silkie chicken and working up through finger-destroying macaws, mystery-solving crows, and finally the prehistoric nightmare fuel that is the emu. Along the way, Lindsay discovers that some birds are actually kind of cuddly, some can literally take your finger off, and absolutely none of them should be your housepet. Bonus detours include marmosets with attitude, wolf dogs with complicated love lives, a very lippy donkey named Jalapeño, and Winnie the Moo a red Angus cow who fundraises for her own upkeep via an automated grain dispenser.
Oh! And I wrote a book, so definitely make sure to grab it—Epic Earth out now!

I'd like to suggest if you want a pet bird to get a pigeon! They're domesticated and come in lots of fun varieties, bond with people, and can't take your fingers off. They also live between 10 and 20 years, so it's not an insane amount of dedication like parrots.

Big cats may be more dangerous than birds, but to be fair, cats are friend-shaped, birds are not.

In fairness the emus would freak me out a bit too. I’ve met ostriches eye to eye and they were more intimidating than the lions in the same tour. They can peck hard move really fast. And the fact they’re basically dinosaurs really hits you in person.

honestly i get it. with big cats you know exactly the kinda danger your getting into but birds are deceptive i mean unless you do research or work with birds would you know that chickens can seriously hurt you or that toucans have serrated beaks?

My parents accidentally ran over the mom of a newborn fawn a couple years ago. We called our local game warden to surrender her to a rescue. For some reason he instead gave us a pile of paperwork to keep her for her first month. 12 year old me was in charge of her. We bottle fed her and used our goat lot to raise her since we found her in the ditch nect to the road in front of her property. She imprinted on me and even knew me by name. We gave her back after the month was over and she's now in a deer sanctuary with her adoptuve mom.

Emu's can charge & peck in a scary way , Ostriches are very terittorial , have sharp claws & powerful kick &can trample you to death but the most fearsome of all, the Cassowary are today's closest living equivalent to velociraptor , usually very shy but when threatened their 5-inch/12.7cm dagger-like claws, 30 mph/50 km/h running speed, and powerful kicks are capable of killing humans & animals alike. They live up to40 yrs in the wild, 60 years in captivity …

I understand that people can be afraid of birds but it’s such a foreign concept to me as someone who has had birds their whole life. My instincts that should tell me to flinch when something flies at my head just tell me to close my eyes. I have known people who were afraid and I felt so badly because I couldn’t even imagine it enough to predict what might be scary to warn them about it, I was reminded of that when Stompy made Lindsay flinch when he turned and I thought how that would make me smile and I would never expect someone to think that’s scary. I always want to share my birds with people but we all see them differently so it’s hard to guarantee a positive experience.
(Also my current birds are chickens. Yay for domesticated avians as pets!)
