Jazz Drumming Prodigy Reacts To Whiplash (Greyson Nekrutman)
If you saw 2014’s award-winning movie Whiplash, you probably had questions:
Did they do it right, or is the actor overdramatizing what drummers actually do?
When Whiplash came out back in 2014, everyone was talking about it. The Academy Award-winning film covers the experience of a young jazz drummer and his intense music instructor. If you’re a drummer, everyone from your best friend to your weird uncle has probably sent you the trailer or a clip from the movie at some point.
Hollywood tends to add dramatic effect where it wouldn’t exist in real life, and a movie about drummers is no exception. So we asked Greyson Nekrutman, a young jazz drumming prodigy himself, to react to Whiplash and see how much of it looked convincing.
He’s the same age as the main character and has also had to work hard to prove himself. Check out the full video to hear Greyson’s take on Hollywood’s biggest drumming movie.

I was always waiting for Nieman to sabotage the performance at some point just to give the last FU to Fletcher

One thing about the first scene that has always bugged me but I never see anyone else mention is the fact that fletcher tells the band to start at two different points (more if i remember correctly) being [bar] 17 and then "downbeat on 18" but the music is exactly the same every time. Is this just me or have others noticed it too?

I beg to differ, the story is not about an abusive teacher, it's a nuanced tale of how the guy became a legend, the nuanced part is that to build a legend, one has to experience extreme environment which at first sight seems crazy and nobody agrees that this should happen, but those experiences build legends, that's the real world we live in and one could say that Fletcher was the bad character, but he built the legend which wouldn't happen if he wasn't 🙂 it's a story of courage

Well I think the point is Fletcher is f*cking w him w the Tempo atuff.

Well, the story is about an extremely abusive fictional character, so anything is possible. I don’t think you could go to such extremes in real life without compromising your job and career

What would Buddy do?
They didn't have to make him into such an Ass!
If Buddy Rich saw this in Real life he would have kicked his Ass.

All I took from this was "Yes, worst case scenario, this can and probably has happened". Good to know that Miles Teller and J.K simmons know for the most part what they're doing

I think Greyson has missed a lot of the points each scene was trying to make. Greyson keeps asking why the drummers are playing like that and why they are so puffed out. The conductor is obviously just seeing which of the two drummers (primarily the protagonist) will crumble first, its not about their technique or skills, its about their resilience, mental fortitude, and who is willing to 'keep pace' with the conductor himself. So when the protagonist is practicing, he's conscious of the drills the conductor will put him through and preparing for that.

Is this a trick to make us all go like "Eeeeeeeh… I think I'll just go for the online course instead"? 😅
Also, my favorite reference to "Whiplash" was the parody they made on "American Dad" with the clown school, because it made a lot more sense than how that movie went.

Once Fletcher actually supports Niemann and trusts his ability, Niemann doesnt have anything to prove. He's just freed up.

It's annoying that he doesn't watch the entire scene first and then react to it
@joshuagillard06

I think that the drum players physical effort (the strain and how it looks dramatic) can be seen realistically if you consider the pressure Fletcher puts on the drummers. When your mind is stressed, your body mimics that stress by tightening the muscles and increasing strain. If the drummers are terrified of having chairs or other threats being launched at them, and feel like they have to fight each other to get the part, the amount of stress it would put onto them would be chronic. Thematically, I love that it depicts true stress even if it isn't crazy realistic how they got so stressed (chairs being thrown)

Also I think a lot of Fletcher pushing him or telling him he isn't on Tempo, he wasn't doing because of the actual tempo, but just to push him to the maximum extent even if he had to lie

That trumpet players going high after cut off would make a lot of directors mad, no reason for that.

Fun fact: Miles Teller, the actor portraying the main character in this film, plays the drums in the movie.
