This was a great video; thanks for the tips. Out of curiosity, how do you build from nothing, with zero likes and subscribers and get people to check out your content when you're just starting out?

Okay so I'm not white or male and i wanna be a youtuber. What do I do!?!??!?! jk such a great video and I agree, you comment section is awesome. I was expecting to see a lot of negativity about you saying the white and male characteristic, but I don't see any. Refreshing!

I am a straight, white male with good grades (that come easily to me) living in one of the best countries in the world (Canada). Man, I feel spoiled.

This is SO spot on. I'm just starting a channel and at some point each of my friends has asked me "how will you get noticed?" and the only answer I need to give is "be a charismatic white dude." I justify it to myself by planning on using my popularity as a platform for campaigning for social justice issues outside of my educational content. You do an amazing job of being educational and socially informative at the same time (case in point: this video), which cue cheesy music is inspiring to me, but I haven't worked out how I'd be able to do that quite yet.

That could be an interesting follow up to this video – how you manage to be entertaining, factually informative, and socially informative is trick that would be helpful to many people I think.

As an aspring youtuber (with semi philosophical videos also), do you think its possible to also talk about your specific rise to youtube "fame"?

Maybe some will agree with me here, that the topics in contemporary feminism aren't what feminism should be about.

What many feminists in western societies do bring up as important issues are equal rights, domestic abuse, rape, sexism and so on – although these subjects are important in themselves, I do not believe these to be topics which can be said to be 'feminist' only considering our societies have abolished most of the opression women face today. In fact, these topics/subjects are not feminist, but is something which should be embraced by all groups as human rights issues. As such it shouldn't be feminism who deals with violence and gender equality, but society as a whole.

If you will agree with me on this, can someone give an example of what role feminism have today (in western societies, third would countries are an exemption) or should have?

I think the main reason the comment section is so nice is because you're basic subscripers are subscribed for the sake of philosophy (I subscribed when looking for outside philosophy while I wasn't studying philosophy), the more you branch out the ruder comments I imagine you'll get. That and philosophy general won't appeal the mass audience. As to YouTube touching your viewers, that reminds me of art. I enjoy art because through art bonding in different ways is possible. Art is in itself a gift (for those bonds) and a curse (as art generally faces much criticism). Overall, I'm subscribed in hopes to learn, so you succeed in that goal and thanks.

I really appreciate your videos, you have really helped me grasp certain ideas and concepts relating to philosophy that I otherwise would not have so easily understood. You seem to genuinely care about the content that you create and us, your viewers. Thank you.

Hello. I'm a random person in the YouTube comments, and I'm going to tell you how racism and privilege don't exist, and that philosophy has nothing to do with social justice. There is no white privilege, and I will prove it by giving an example of one really successful black person on YouTube. See! If one black person can be successful why can't the rest? Show me evidence that I am wrong, or I will refuse to apply any kind of self-reflection or critical thinking to my arguments, even then I can't guarantee.

Next I will show you there is no Global Warming. OK so I have this snow ball from outside….

Criticism: be white, be male, be charismatic, and have money are bad advises! For instance, I'm white …check, male …check, charismatic… not in a million years. Admittedly, be white and be male are worse, I could at least try to be charismatic or to make a lot of money before trying to make a lot of money on youtube.

Here the only thing you need to know to be successful on YouTube:
    Make good videos!

Thinking women and people of colour are being held down is retarded!

    March 7, 2026 at 4:48 pm

i don't agree with the racial argument.

One of my favorite Youtubers is MKHB and he is not only black but his channel is about technology.
Black people are maybe the least with technology associated people of all! Yet he is very successful because he has quality material.

Sad truth when it comes to harassing female youtubers though ):

Re point 4, how is youtube "an industry built on authenticity and being an honest, approachable, down-to-earth person that people can relate to"?

If you've followed any of the top end most subscribed channels or the most subscribed gaming channels or any of the "great debate"y channels for a while you get to see how most of it is a big showcase of the egotistical, self-aggrandising unpleasantness and deliberate fakery that makes humanity so genuinely unpleasant as a species.

I'd like to say I have more refined tastes than most but I like to rubberneck on a good nerdfight as much as the next person.

hrm… oh man… I was enjoying this channel when it was about Philosophy – but this social justice stuff is putting me off… you may need to rename your channel soon.

Wow. I didn't know I would be seeing self-hating white male guilt on THIS channel. That wasn't even advice! I'm sorry for the criticism but that was just a sad attempt to be a social justice warrior.
Don't get me wrong though; I still like this channel.

I mentioned on one of Dylan's videos that he makes it into the acknowledgements of my first book, so do you. Learning has become an unquenchable thirst for me, and by golly am I ever grateful to have stumbled by your watering hole.

Hi Olly. bravely done on points 2 and 3, also sensitively done which is what I would expect. this vid is very useful and I will be recommending it, and the Tomska one, to friends who are thinking about business in general and Youtube in particular.

You're spot on regading the english speaking part on youtube and skin color.
The first time I watched a video on the ThirdPew's channel and my first thought was "this guy is black". This came to me as a surprise, I wasn't expecting that because most of the channels that I am subcribed (If not all of them) is made by white guys.

And you can see the corelation with money, skin color, YouTube, and on the internet in general. Just see Vine, for instance. As it requires less production value, It has a broader demographics, even with a lesser number of content.

i hadn't seen these sexist comments that feminists keep going on about, i look through the comments in most vids, and all i see of who that do send insults on vids where there is a woman in the vid are those insulting the people for WHAT they say, not who they are. take anata sarkeesian for example, its not that she is female, its that she is FULL OF SHIT..a liar, a con-artist… because thats who she really is. it has nothing to do with her gender.

Well Olly, let me say that when I watch your videos it makes me want to study philosophy more and more. I got a BA in philosophy and am doing journalism, but boy I should go back.

I can't learn philosophy cause otherwise I have to drop one of the subjects I love but I also love philo . you have made a such amazing content here so I can learn thanks n on a personal note I really njoyed this video a lot !!!

With the way you organized your list, I don't really think number 2 deserved to be in there. After all it is not the case that creators are treated differently for being non-white (or at least, that is not the point you are making) but "merely" that they are less likely to fulfill the requirement in number 1.

This was an amazing presentation about what youtube is and how it really works. Thank goodness someone stood up to tell the truth.
I have been contemplating of making a youtube channel geared also to education and maybe comedy but one thing that hinders me are numbers 1 and 2.
Thanks Ollie for this amazing video.
