It wasn't just an arrow wound. The arrow was smothered in animal feces, infecting her with Ecoli. The Ecoli is what killed her. They even said in the show the wound would be a but it was a dirty arrow and explained dirty meant covered in feces.

First of all, IT’S A SHOW….let it go.. second of all she was shot in the abdomen with an arrow. And if you were to have paid attention, you would’ve heard that it struck her liver and that the Indians had a habit of dipping them in manure prior to shooting them. This in itself as they stated in the show creates a lot of infection. I am One as well that did not want to see her die. I thought she was a very important part of the show however it is a show and it does help. Explain how they ended up in Montana. I think there’s too many people that get wrapped up in these movies and shows that think it’s reality of some sort and they end up losing track of reality it’s made for entertainment and that’s how we should see it

The whole series is amazing.. it’s clearly about life’s most extraordinary ups and downs.. Elsa’s character was great in her life and death .. people need to embrace the good and bad in life .. mortality is very real and sometimes not as long as we would like . This prequel was amazing

Yeah I couldn’t hold back the tears when Elsa died. This show was heavy on the emotional side, but a really enjoyable watch. A+ for me

There was foreshadowing in the first episode. You see her get shot by an arrow. I guess that doesn’t mean she HAS to die, but everyone was fairly warned from the beginning that it was a definite possibility that she would.

I've got news for you. No penetrating wound with nastiness like an arrow, to the liver is treatable, not even today. You're a gonner, in minutes, due to blood loss, with infection a guaranteed backup.

I thought Elsa Dutton's death scene was absolutely phenomenal. So simple and calm, and yet so overwhelmingly powerful. I'm not a huge fan of most American TV series, but '1883'… yes, I loved every minute of it. '1883' had a lot of character, with the actors being able to play their roles with intensity and truthfulness. I also absolutely adored how the special love between beautiful Elsa and Sam, that handsome Native American young man, was staged and how it was woven into Elsa's death!
