Burgertime NES is fine even if the ladders are a little too sticky. Side Pocket NES is fantastic and maybe the best reason to buy this. I am not a fan of Karate Champ NES. As these are official NES ports and not the atrocious Atari bootlegs seen on the Atari Super Micros, this is a decent choice for people who love Burgertime or Side Pocket. The screen and sound on these are really good.

SHAME on Hyper-Mega-Tech as their other handhelds are great. It seems like things are regressing! And NO EXCUSE for adding 1/2 player selection on the screen and NOT including that. That's really piss poor on their part! ;p(

Burger Time is one of THE best arcade games ever for me, however I think the sequel was way underappreciated and just awesome. There's also been a modern title on Switch and a different one on 360 and they were both good and also mostly overlooked, but worth checking out. Sadly the former (BurgerTime world tour) would have to be on Xenia if you don't already own it, but it works fine on it as I ripped my original rom and tested it (yes I bought it on my 360 back in the day). I would never even consider something this tiny as a way to enjoy any kind of game, novelty aside (I am 53, I am over novelties and prefer function), and although I hate karate champ but do like side pocket (particularly side pocket ii), I'll too give this a miss. PS, NES make it almost funny cause it's themed like a mini handheld arcade sort of thing. Evercade has an excellent d pad so Blaze CAN do it but super pockets and seemingly these too, are just awful in that regard.

Thanks for the honest review, Jon. Sorry these turned out to be a dud. Probably still okay for a very, very occasional gamer as a stocking stuffer, but the price places these in a different category.

The My Arcade Micro Players of Burger Time and Karate Champ used the NES-on-a-chip versions, and they were nowhere near as borked as what's shown here. And the Super Impulse Tiny Arcade keychains did Burger Time *far* better!

Some free advice to Hyper Mega Tech: PLEASE do better on these. Take a look at your competition, MyArcade, and what they've pulled off in a similar form factor. They are eating your lunch while you sit there drooling wondering why it's vanishing on you.

Blaze/Hyper Mega Tech really need to up their quality control on this kind of product. Leaving in broken 2 player modes is pretty ridiculous! And those sound son Karate Champ are appalling…thanks for calling them out on these disappointing products.

It seems like all this cool stuff keeps emerging, but people have lost knowledge of how to make it superior like stuff used to be. Maybe inflation? Also, the market is flooded with Asian knock offs with high quantity but no quality. At least these little local concentrated games seem to be good quality.

Thanks very much for doing this review. Burger time got my interest. But seeing that it's the NES version, it's a pass now. Interesting that side pocket is the best playing game. Here's the other problem with karate champ, the A and b buttons are reversed and so the game doesn't play right. Since the b button was on the left side of the NES controller, that was the left attack. The right hand side and so it was the right attack. Since those buttons are reversed on this unit, the attacks are reversed then.. Thanks for the videos. I really do enjoy it. them.

I delayed watching this after the first 3, but eventually I decided I should at least give it a go. They really are a set of failures aren't they. I wanted to like them but not one of them hit the mark, far too many flaws, it's as though no one actually play tested them. I'm glad I watched your videos first and didn't just buy any because even though I don't really want or need any of them, I could have easily thrown my money at asteroids as I'm a suckered for that game. You saved me the disappointment

It's a keychain, it's not going to be perfect. When I was 10, I had the yellow LCD Mattel version of burger time and I loved it!

You got guys here talking about extra data cables and better ROMs. It's a keychain

I still think this is the best of the bunch.

I can’t figure out why would they pick the infamously terrible NES version of Karate Champ over literally anything else in the Data East catalogue.

Hello again, Jon. 👋 I certainly would have thought that this BurgerTime pocket player would have been the best of the bunch. The BurgerTime play-through was ok. The controls remind me of the Intellivision version. If you are not pressing up or down correctly your chef character will just freeze, and your a “sitting duck” for those ingredients to get you.
The Karate Champ was really awkward with those weird sounds coming from the speaker.
That pool game looked fun. Weird though why it froze to force you to turn it off then on again.
Thank you for the review, Jon, also for your MULE live stream, although I couldn’t make much sense out of the game.
See you on the next one… in December.

The NES was not that big over here in the United Kingdom. I would have preferred the arcade roms to be on there. That whining noise is unforgivable, so are the 2 player options which are useless. Also they are £22.65 here but for the same money you can get one of those clone R36S consoles and play a lot more than this.

I wonder if Hyper Mega Tech wants some cheese with their whine? I have a hard time getting off ladders in Burger Time, it would probably be worse with this small screen and this D-pad. And 14:58 THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID!

“Nobody said it’d be the arcade version.”

It’s Data East so I guess Blaze didn’t have an extra nickel for the rights.

Also, I hate to say it, but if they’re going nes version may as well do Bad Dudes instead of Karate Champ. The small form factor might actually fix its graphical issues.

That BurgerTime rom is the same one thats on the Data East Evercade Cart. i tried the BurgerTime on my Super Pocket Data East Edition and it too has that control issue if you try to move in the diagonal but the rom on the Super pocket is different than this one. Its a real shame that they dropped the ball with these especially with Karate Champ though with that game you really need twin sticks to play it properly.

  18. @loganjorgensen

    January 20, 2026 at 10:32 am

Lazy, lazy design using Famiclone tech, way too common.😞 A little more thought in ROM hacking and a link cable could have made 2-player mode possible.
Karate Champ on NES is a pretty inaccurate arcade port since it should have been like Smash TV with a two controller twin-stick control option included.
Largely I fault the D-pad, got to have a good one even for casual pocket gaming.

Sad piece of junk. It's a bad start using NES roms, but it can't even run them perfectly? I had a cheap Gameboy Micro styled handheld that just played some NES games 15 years ago which ran at least this good.

amazon has a data east version of the my arcade pixel pocket pro, at the same price, with 8 games including these 3. can you compare that with this?
