Zinny Zan On Shotgun Messiah, Poison Plagiarism, & Reuniting With Harry Cody

The Hair Metal Guru | December 25, 2025

Zinny Zan came to my attention on the debut Shotgun Messiah album, which I LOVE. And then in 2005 I found the Zan Clan album produced by Chris Laney, and Zinny Zan was back for me. Well, he’s back AGAIN, reunited with former Shotgun Messiah guitarist Harry Cody, and in this interview he opened up about all of that, his time with Easy Action and Poison stealing their song “We Go Rocking,” what happened with Shotgun Messiah, and could he ever see reuniting the original band. I hope you enjoy this conversation.

I still have my Shotgun Messiah debut album sealed, it’s one of my top five favorite 80s albums and the best Shotgun Messiah album in my opinion. Zinny is fucking awesome, I’m excited to hear about his upcoming projects.

American bands are always touring Europe. There is a way better audience there and in South America. It sucks to want live rock shows in the US now and there aren’t even venues left except in big cities 😢

Loved his story about the I Want Action plagiarism situation ripping off Easy Action’s song! I’d never heard about this story before in my life! Guru, you are the Fox News/CNN of 80’s hair metal! Thanks for all the hard hitting interviews and great questions!

Shotgun Messiah is in my top five favorite bands ever. The first time I heard “shout it out“ it literally changed my whole viewpoint on what music can be. Still one of the most underrated tracks ever. And I still follow Tim Skold’s career to this day. Excellent interview.

Interviews like 2-4 hours on this channel usually feels like 15-30 minutes. It's probably because the great quality guests and interview technique. Anthony (I hope I got that right) have great balanced interviews without too much getting in the way when the guest is talking. I've seen interviews where the interviewer talks more about himself. Here you have the opposite on this channel.

The fact that Zan was the one who said NO BALLADS on the first album…in the 80s….shows pure INTEGRITY! Hell yes, it makes so much more sense why I thought this album was a perfect 10 for me 🙂 fun personal fact, I own one Vinyl album (still in wrapping too) and its Shotgun Messiahs self titled album. I had been into listening to rock and metal a bit in say 4th or 5th grade age, but I would listen to Dee sniders house of hair (which basically played what the normal rock station played) but I heard can distinctly remember hearing Heartbreak Boulevard for the first time and it being a huge HOLY SHIT moment for me. Then when I discovered their first album it put that album to shame for me 🙂 Zinny man you're awesome, sorry I never checked out your solo stuff. I'll start with the 05 album you guys are speaking highly of. Cant wait to hear what you and one of the greatest guitarists of all time, Cody, come up with

I bought the first Shotgun Messiah record back in the days and adored it.
Later bought the first Zan Clan album and it kicked my ass.
BUT I knew very little about Zinny Zan. Almost nothing in fact.
Thanks to Anthony, I am discovering a wonderful human being and it's such a pleasure listening to him.
