Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion, or OTEC, takes advantage of the sun’s heating of the ocean to produce clean energy. It’s pretty cool.

If you take that energy out of the ocean (as it’s not creating new energy, it’s just moving it from one place to another) then what would the implications be to the ocean and the life within it

If it was the ultimate solution it would have more buy-in by now I think. IMHO. Molten salt thorium reactors such as Copenhagen Atomics’ equipment has more potential. Seems simple and if scalable to market soon it could be a game changer.

Its four years in the future and ocean surface temperatures have reached critical levels. Coral reefs are dying from the heat globally, beginning the death of fisheries that people have depended on from the beginning of time. Water temperatures in the summer of 2024 reached 100 degrees in freedom units (38 celsius). Fertiliser pollution from corporate farms has caused unnaturally large and devastating red tide and people are dying from vibrio grown on the pollution.

Electricity needs an overhaul. We're doing it wrong. Renewable don't scale up efficiently, but for end-user generation, they can make a big difference. Electricity should be a cottage industry, each household and business should generate as much of its own electricity as possible, take from the grid at need, and sell the excess power they generate. Use technologies like what is discussed in this show to provide an backbone load for the grid, along with hydro and nuclear. Turn the utility companies into grid maintainers and Electricity brokerages that keep track of the how m7ch is contributed or used, every roof should have solar panels and a small ethical axis wind generator. Property with water flow could grow electricity as a cash crop by building a small hydro plant.
Combining mass distribution with decentralized generation is the only way to do this. Centralized generation is a dead end, and trying to keep it is blinding us to the obvious choices we need to make as a species.

This would need to use specific geographic conditions with coastal cities nearby, but it could work. The low efficiency means that the plant would need to be rather large, but the high pressure in the deep sea can provide a pressure differential to work alongside the temperature differential, and the deep sea levels themselves would make a condenser basically passive. That said, the only way this really is going to be financially appealing is if it doubles as a desalination plant, which is when it really has great potential..

All around the world people are having water shortages, and desalination plants that work through osmosis using a membrane, are all highly energy intensive, and boiling water isn't much better, in fact it's less efficient, but using the low pressure in the ocean to boil water would significantly improve efficiency.

The low efficiency of the energy generation doesn't sound like much, but the reality is that with grid energy, lower efficiencies don't matter so much as long as they can be compensated for with increased "volume" (although what that will mean for an efficiency this low is questionable). If you double it as a desalination plant, you're using the same space for 2 different purposes, making the entire process more efficient overall.

I'm suddenly imagining someone making an inland version of this, like a really deep dam with an OTEC in it.
Thing is, for that to work, how deep would it have to be to reach the required cold temperatures and how much surface area would be needed for the required surface heat?
I imagine a benefit of doing this inland, not at sea, would be less danger from storms and less biofouling meaning lower maintenance costs.
Of course a lot of the benefits of having otec at sea would be lost but maybe at a lower cost?
I'm not sure, especially about price.

These kinds of solutions only make a real difference if we starting making steps towards societal change to reduce our resource demands and waste output.

another con I didn't hear mention is that if this idea took hold and went "mainstream" then we could be at the opposite end of the extreme where it's too cold. That would take a lot of time though.

I had to pause the video after hearing "212 Freedom Units" because I was laughing so hard I couldn't pay attention to what was being said. "Freedom Units…" love it!

I love it. But people don't Wana give up theor ocean view for a bunch of water turbines.. it's a solid idea but blame the rich alone this hasn't happened yet, a poor man wouldn't give a shit. As said in the south
