One of my favorite paragons in media is Aang from Avatar the last Airbender. Surrounded by an equally inspiring and good cast of characters it's sometimes easy to forget how rare it is to have such a goofy, optimistic protagonist that isn't annoying and who also tries to remain a pacifist in most situations and rarely ever makes the morally incorrect choice. I think what separates him from a character like superman is that while very powerful in his own universe, throughout his story he is never exclusively the most powerful and also is very emotionally expressive than our favorite man in blue tights. I think some writers forget that just cuz they have a character that is a paragon doesn't mean they always have everything figured out and aren't immune to feelings of intense sadness, despair or anger even if they are known for being incredibly optimistic and good natured.

"Maybe it's unreal but it's an ideal that inspires me."

That right there is it. You've hit the nail on the head there. I think that people who stop liking Superman are people who have largely lost the ability to be inspired. People get sick of Superman because his failures are never related to personal moral failure. He may fuck up occasionally, do the wrong thing because he's been tricked or because he's been messed up by bizarro kryptonite, but he never fails because he was selfish for a moment, or because he was lazy or thoughtless. No matter what, his intentions are unimpeachable. It's an impossibly high standard, and causes most people to become uncomfortable with how easily they think selfishly. People that still like Superman into adulthood don't feel uncomfortable with the standard he sets because they are still striving in some way to meet the same standard.

Not saying we succeed, of course, just saying we're still trying.

how about incompetent good guys : don quixote

or good buffoons: the ones I can think of are british, any male dr. who sidekick, any Stephen Fry Character, or a good cop who doesn't draw his weapon for fear of shooting a kid and gets shot dead himself, Ron Weasley or Neville Longbottom

or venal good guys like Leopold Bloom in Ulysses

or good guy losers like : el dooderino The Big Lebowski

or the washout of all time Odysseus himself

there's a lot to this heroism stuff

Good people are underrated. I'm sick and tired of this idea that Edgyâ„¢ and brooding and grimdark characters are more ~*~*realistic and relatable.*~*~

(The animated Batman movies and interpretations of Bruce Wayne are so much better.)

    2 words: Steven Universe.
Sure, it's a kids show, but I think it is the best animated show out there so far.

The protagonist always tries to do what's right, even when faced with situations that traumatize him and when dealing with things that are clearly out of his hands. He's always trying to make people feel better about themselves no matter who they are.

    You should watch it.

The whole point of the "bad" good guys (e.g. batman) is to present a story about moral ambiguity. Is it okay to plant that cocaine brick since you knew he murdered those children and you couldn't prove it? Should you beat to a pulp the rapist that evaded the law? Testing those moral boundaries is what makes those types of heroes compelling.

yo t1j what do you think of Rick and Morty? It's my favorite TV show/comic as of late. Love you videos! I like hearing your perspective on things (plus you like the gorillaz so you're obviously cool)

I agree Harry Potter is not a likeable character AT ALL. He's not even really a good friend. I watched 1 episode of 30 Rock that my roommates just happened to have on in the background and I couldn't understand my Tina Fey's character was so popular (but perhaps I should try watching more)

    HAKO!

I also love it when there's an unambitious good character placed in a crapsack and dark setting, and manages to turnover everything from being dark and depressive to a surprisingly happy ending. Shame I mostly see these characters in video games, and is usually controlled by yourself. Role-playing games with dark settings like Dragon Age and Deus Ex have a lot of choices that are grey, but you can still try to make your character to be clear cut good guy who always chooses to spare a life, make a third choice and don't compromise anything and make everyone happy.

We need a good resurgence of clear cut good guys again, since it's nice to actually have a role model, even a fictional one, to give a positive perspective and something to strive for despite all odds and dark moments.
