One distinction I make is between friends and acquaintances. I have LOTS of acquaintances, but wait elevates someone to the friend level in that we're committing to reciprocity and also calling each other out (and up) when we are still the person out of integrity. With acquaintances, I don't have either of those agreements.
my 'word' is proportion. which I guess doesn't veer too far off from reciprocation. the thing is, it has to be individual to a point. if we're very sensitive and easily hurt, yada yada, it's never going to be easy. but seeing minimum gestures from others which reflect consideration and respect, that already goes a long way. and the logic that Neal mentions, is the paramount figurative and literal ground that we have to stand on. wonderful talk to listen to from two very special and talented doodes
I have stopped trying with some of my past friends, but I haven’t verbally ever had the break up talk. Feels a bit like ghosting but I was chasing them before and it was so dissatisfying. I just had to let go. No hard feeling though. Wish them well
I really see eye to eye with you on this stuff. Even though you were spoiled with warm plates, I agree that friendship is better when defined. I wasn't familiar with you until today. So far I like your comedy. Spoiled prick.
This made me SO HAPPY. To see two men/comedians who are smart, emotionally mature, honest, and very respectful of each other. Tremendous! I friendship is: 1. Doing things together. CHECK 2. Balanced. CHECK 3. Honest with both the good and the bad. CHECK 4. NOT competitive. CHECK 5. Helping each other grow. CHECK
This is phenomenal advice on how to expect to be treated. Learning that, as a life-long people pleaser, has definitely changed my outlook on life for the better. Hearing this conversation is confirmation on that change being incredibly positive.
Lack of BOUNDARIES in your life sounds like it was a really hard thing for you to get over, good thing you figured that out any fucking advice Neal?????
My close friend and I once broke up, over constant plan cancellations. We got back together after about a year and refer to that time as ‘when we broke up.’
