Todd in the Shadows | July 31, 2025

New Kids on the Block had a bunch of hits, but their frontman Jordan Knight only had one when he tried to go solo…

if you gave us a one hit wonderland on this, does that mean we can get a one hit wonderland episode on what's left on me by nick lashey (the lead singer of 98°) and cake by the ocean by dnce (y'all remember that short lived pop group by joe jonas)?

i mean, i remember you had the latter on your best of 2016 list but i think it'll be interesting seeing an episode on the short lived pop group.

Not that I expect anyone to care, but nsync talking about "dirty pop" was pretty clearly referencing pop music being a guilty pleasure, not about how sexual it was. I've seen a few people make this mistake and it's weird to me how this gets missed in the context of the rest of the lyrics.

As someone that lived through that era of New Kids they were beyond big, crap you could argue they were bigger than any boy band since. New Kids influenced boy bands for decades, and had tons of fans back then.

I would say from his Surreal Life appearance I think most of his issue was he had the talent but seemed to be a bit of a recluse other than having a couple of close friends IE Nick Carter and Donny Wahlberg

I think Todd and I were born within a month of each other. Every time relevant touchstone in this was the same for me- New Kids on the Block is literally the first pop group I ever heard of, I was in kindergarten haha

The worst slowed-down version of a song I’ve ever heard was… no joke… Hey Ya. Somebody slowed down a song to bring out the lyrics that has the line “you don’t want to hear me, you just wanna dance,”. How can we dance if we’re being forced to hear the lyrics?????

I was at a cattle call for the film, Howard, the Duck, and the woman I was hanging out with won Thomas Dolby‘s briefcase. He was incredibly nice. Over the years, his work influenced the steampunk community. He picked up that whole retro Science vibe before anyone else. And of course blinded by Science is the flipside of blinded by love that sappy music has been singing forever.

We need to know more about Todd's childhood. You weren't allowed to listen to pop music because you were six? Said like this is a normal, everyday occurrence

Jordan Knight's overall mistake was making legacy artist moves when he should've been trying to act more like a newcomer. Joining a reality show is usually how you maintain relevance when people know your name but aren't that interested in your new releases. Making tons of covers is what you do when you have an established style but not a lot of new ideas. You don't normally do these things if you're in your hit-making years.

Jordan Knight was in a position where he could be perceived as a hot new artist whose name you happen to know or a washed-up ex-boy band member. We know which way he went, unfortunately.

hahaha I didn't think I had ever heard this song until the second 12:13 hit in this video. Then I realized it held the dubious distinction of being the worst blanket dance number in recorded history.

What a wild take. Jordan’s self-titled album is phenomenal. Separate Ways is one of my favorite songs of all time. And in his “Love Songs” album, his version of “Tender Love” is quite possibly better than the original. Jordan’s massive anxiety and battle with alcoholism really did hold him back. But vocally, he is phenomenal

What's not to like? Man, I'm an old prog rock snob head but I dig this jam! Ya got a totally infectious beat, very cool synth tones, crazy energy levels, tongue in cheek lyrics and visuals, nods to the gods of 80s Japanese tech, yeah, TD knew how to craft a killer pop song.

Now I remember why I purposely chose to ignore pop/mainstream music from the very late 90s thru the early oughts. Not saying these people aren't talented, I just wasn't in their demographic as a middle-aged adult with no kids

His solo stuff all seems to have that same, odd, slightly out of time crunching sound that's on Justin Timberlake's "Cry Me A River". I have no idea what it is or why someone thought that sounded good, but obviously someone did as they did it again for JT. It kinda sounds like someone was eating crisps in the studio and standing right next to a microphone so you can hear the saliva. It's worse on the JT song. Maybe it's badly recorded beatboxing?

"They were called Nick & Knight – why?"

Clearly they were fans of the greatest England ODI opening batter of the 90s Nick Knight
