Red Hoop Talk EP 20: DALLIN MAYBEE, Northern Arapaho & Seneca
Dallin Maybee is an enrolled Northern Arapaho on his mother’s side, raised on the Cattaraugus Indian Reservation, home of the Seneca Nation of Indians on his father’s side. A long time artist and performer, he has toured with varying performing arts groups, including national and international travels with the acclaimed American Indian Dance Theater where he was a hoop dancer, Northern Traditional, and contemporary dancer as well as assuming a role of public speaker. As an artist, he shows at various art shows throughout the year, garnering numerous awards and ribbons, including the prestigious Best of Show at the Santa Fe Indian Market. His art is in collections worldwide, including the National Museum of the American Indian, a Smithsonian Institute.
Dallin has a Bachelor degree in Philosophy, with a minor in American Indian studies, has completed Masters work at UCLA in Federal Indian law, and has received his Juris Doctorate from the Sandra Day O’Conner College of Law at Arizona State University. After law school, Dallin prosecuted briefly before assuming the Chief Operating Officer position for the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts, the non-profit that produces the largest Native American fine art show in the world, the Santa Fe Indian Market. This singular show draws 1000 artists, 140,000 visitors and has an economic impact of $80 million during the week-long event. He has testified to Congress on the Indian Arts and Crafts Act and routinely appears as a speaker and panelist on racial equity and social justice, arts, and Native American culture. He currently resides in Colorado, where he is the Assistant Director of Development for the Native American Rights Fund, a legal non-profit with a 50-year history of high level legal advocacy on behalf of Tribes and Indigenous communities throughout the country.
