How My Chemical Romance Saved the Broken

Trash Theory | March 18, 2025

For many My Chemical Romance were the band that changed their life, the band that saved them. But something about them really fucking irked a certain subsection of rock fans. In 2007, readers of British rock magazine Kerrang voted them Best and Worst band of the year, such was their polarizing appeal. Its debatable what warranted this reaction, maybe it was their aesthetic, their demeanour, their fans. Most likely it was just an older generation of rock fans not understanding the appeal of these new upstarts. And the songs, they’d melt your soul: “I’m Not Okay (I Promise)”, “Helena”, “Headfirst for Halos”, “The Ghost of You” and “Welcome to the Black Parade”. Each one an emo anthem tailor-made for the downtrodden. And yet, My Chemical Romance were probably the most important rock band of the 2000s, they were the saviours of the outcasts.
