Why YouTubers Should Have an Email Mailing List
It might seem kind of strange that I’ve decided to make an email mailing list. There’s this weird sort of perception that communicating through email outside of a strictly business context is kind of outdated. However, I think that due to today’s social media climate, it is actually the perfect time for YouTubers, musicians, and any other kind of creative to make a mailing list.
Deplatforming is a huge issue. Many people are familiar with the deletion of Twitter accounts belonging to the likes of Milo and Sargon of Akkad being deleted due to controversial statements. However, even people who aren’t controversial such as Colossal is Crazy and Anything4Views have been deleted. Hell, I just found out about Rose McGowan temporarily having her Twitter account deleted.
Sure, we can jump from platform to platform hoping to avoid the banhammer, but you lose people along the way and you wind up in a never ending game of whack a mole.
There’s also the issue of algorithms that are unfavorable. Facebook and Twitter don’t want you linking offsite to your YouTube videos, and YouTube penalizes you when someone leaves the site on one of your videos. Email reaches everyone that you want it to. It can also never fully be taken away from you as long as email exists.
