I was asking AI for the price of vinyl and price increases over the years and it came back with this value for money question compared to digital: AI = When you look past the modern romance of vinyl, it is an inherently flawed, high-maintenance audio format that requires a lot of money just to combat its physical limitations.
The technical drawbacks are the exact reasons the music industry spent billions developing digital audio:
    1. Surface Noise (Snap, Crackle, Pop)
Vinyl is an open, physical medium. Every piece of dust, static electricity, and microscopic cat hair that settles in the groove creates an audible pop or click. To keep it quiet, you have to invest in anti-static brushes, wet-cleaning machines, and inner sleeves—and even then, a dead-silent background is rare.
    2. Physical Degradation (Warping & Wear)
Vinyl is incredibly sensitive to its environment. If records are stored flat instead of vertically, or if they are exposed to sunlight or a warm room, they warp easily. Furthermore, every single time a diamond stylus passes through the plastic groove, it causes microscopic friction. The record literally degrades a tiny bit with every single playback.
    3. High-Frequency Loss & Inner Groove Distortion
As the tonearm moves closer to the center of the record, the physical circumference of the groove shrinks. Because the record spins at a constant speed (33 ⅓ RPM), the music is squeezed into less and less physical space. This causes a massive drop-off in high-frequency detail and results in Inner Groove Distortion (IGD), which makes vocals and cymbals sound harsh and fuzzy near the end of a side.
    4. Speed Instability (Wow & Flutter)
    • Wow: A slow, rhythmic pitch fluctuation usually caused by a record that was pressed slightly off-center or is mildly warped.
    • Flutter: A rapid, jittery pitch variation caused by microscopic imperfections in the turntable's motor, belt, or bearings.
To get a turntable with a motor precise enough to completely eliminate wow and flutter, you usually have to spend hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars.
The Contrast: What Are You Using Instead?
For pure, unadulterated audio fidelity, modern digital streaming (like Apple Music, Tidal, or Qobuz) delivers perfect, uncoloured 24-bit studio quality with zero noise floor, perfect speed stability, and absolute linearity from the bass to the highest frequencies—all for a fraction of the cost of a single new LP.
