Puddle of Mudd frontman Wes Scantlin went from post-grunge stardom and one of the biggest rock songs of the 2000s to years of bizarre headlines, public meltdowns, arrests, and career-threatening controversy. In this rock documentary, we look at the chaotic rise and fall of the singer behind “Blurry,” “She Hates Me,” “Control,” and “Away From Me”—and why his story became one of rock’s most infamous downward spirals.

Puddle of Mudd exploded after Fred Durst signed the band to Flawless Records, setting up the release of Come Clean in 2001. The album reached No. 9 on the Billboard 200, while “Blurry” became the band’s defining hit, reaching No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and dominating rock radio. But even as Wes Scantlin became one of the most recognizable voices of the post-grunge era, comparisons to Nirvana and Kurt Cobain followed him everywhere.

Then came the bad decisions.

This video covers Wes Scantlin’s most unbelievable public incidents: the Puddle of Mudd singer being banned from Graceland, getting arrested after riding an airport baggage carousel, multiple airport confrontations, onstage problems, police chases, legal trouble, and the notorious fake-bomb device that brought out a bomb squad. We also examine the years of substance-related struggles, attempts at rehabilitation, the band’s fractured live performances, and the recurring conflict surrounding the home Scantlin lost to foreclosure.

Of course, no story about Puddle of Mudd’s frontman would be complete without the infamous SiriusXM performance of Nirvana’s “About a Girl.” The acoustic cover went viral in 2020 for Scantlin’s strained and off-key vocals, creating a brutal contrast with the Kurt Cobain comparisons that had followed him since Puddle of Mudd broke through. Scantlin later acknowledged that the performance “looked and sounded like total shit.”

Was Wes Scantlin simply another rock star undone by fame, addiction, and self-sabotage? Or is the real story more complicated—a musician repeatedly trying to outrun his past while his worst moments become the headlines that define him? From Come Clean and “Blurry” to mugshots, airport arrests, viral performances, rehab, and yet another chance at recovery, this is the unbelievable story of Puddle of Mudd’s Wes Scantlin.

A band stuck to the frontman is a brutal gig. I bounced in and out of a band in this same situation. The singer was someone genuinely gifted with a voice different than anything I've ever heard to this day. Unfortunately he had some demons. I was sure he was gonna go somewhere and I saw a path to stand behind him, he didn't make it. He crashed out on our fourth gig and I was out. He had a motorcycle accident less than a year later and died.

Everything's so blurry, and I can't think too straight.
I did something stoopid and ended up in jail again.
Preoccupied with anger, I always feel pissed off.
Another world surrounds me and reality's far off.

I met Wes when Puddle of Mudd came through town in the summer of 2001 right when Control exploded as a big hit. He came in to our station to do an interview with our afternoon guy. He was quite nice, and seemingly subdued the day I met him.

I played in a band that opened for them when I was young. He was such a dick. I have opened for plenty of major bands that were incredible people (Sevendust, Lacuna Coil, The Birthday Massacre, and many others) and I couldn't imagine them treating us that way. Puddle Of Mudd and Abandon All Ships were easily the worst people I've ever met in the music industry.

So, in the early 2000s, Wes lived in my home town. I was in a Metal band, amd our Vocalist ended up becoming friends with Wes. Wes invited me to join a new band (side project) with him. I declined, since he had given me bad vibes, from the first time I met him. Five minutes after we met, he was complaining about having to fly out in a couple days. He wasn't looking forward to playing live, at a WWF (WWE) event. As a musician, this irritated me. I would have loved to have opportunities like that. He seemed to take many of those opportunities for granted. He also had a small case of lead singer syndrome. Seeing what happened wirh him later, I'm so glad I didn't get involved with any of his Musical projects.

I always forget how big of a P.O.S he is. I feel for people struggling with addiction but its crazy how some addicts just destroy EVERYTHING they touch while some just affect themselves mostly.

I hit you up on Instagram. I know that the arrests and antics of Wes are click grabbing but there is a whole other part of the story. The part of the story when all of us original members were together and for better or worse had some success before Wes went downhill. It’s unfortunate that the original band had all left by 2010 and the Wes Scantlin circus continued. That is not Puddle of Mudd! Whether you like the music that the four of us made in the early 2000’s or not is none of my concern. My concern is that Wes’s actions on his own now overshadow the actual history of the band. That story is in itself quite interesting and actually sheds light on the unfortunate story that is presented today. The current story has nothing to do with Puddle of Mudd. It has to do with Wes Scantlin. The Puddle of Mudd story is completely different and may be surprising enough that it may get some actual clicks as well. I’ll hit you up on Instagram again.

A photo of an underclothed baby boy used as the album cover art for the band's first major label debut?

I'm not an expert, but it's definitely giving–

Wow .. great story. At first, the outrageous “rock-and-roll” behavior can sound almost absurdly funny—but once addiction, arrests, damaged relationships, and self-destruction take over, there’s nothing glamorous about it. It’s a sad reminder that the wild-rock-star myth can end in real tragedy, not just entertaining headlines.

I saw them at Soaring Eagle Casino in 2011. They sounded good but the most memorable thing was after they were done with their set, the singer tried to climb one of the light scaffoldings that was near me in the lawn standing area. Eventually security came over called him down. They were one of the openers so I imagine he wanted a cool place to watch the remainder of the concert? I don’t know what else would make sense besides not being sober.

The name of the band is enough for anyone getting into music. But then read a title like She Hates Me and then hear it, jeez that would be enough. Those late 90s/early 00's bands that were inspired by that classic Seattle area were appaling. Oh, and don't get me started on that cover of About A Girl…I'll leave it there.

As if I didn't have enough reasons to hate Fred Durst. He's responsible for one of the absolute worst singers of all time (ps, this is proof of how much I love this channel- I'll even watch episodes of musicians/bands I despise).
