The Sad True Story Behind Life with Louie
Life with Louie looked like one of the warmest, funniest cartoons on Fox Kids—but behind it was a surprisingly painful true story.
Louie Anderson based the series on his real childhood growing up in a huge working-class family in Minnesota. The bullies, the financial struggles, his loving mother Ora, and even many of the quirks of his grouchy cartoon father came directly from his own life. But the real man who inspired Andy Anderson was much darker than the version kids saw on Saturday mornings.
In this video, we look at the sad true story behind Life with Louie, Louie Anderson’s complicated relationship with his father, why he deliberately removed the alcoholism and abuse when creating cartoon Andy, and how voicing both his younger self and his father allowed Anderson to recreate the family he wished he had.
We’ll also revisit some of the show’s surprisingly mature episodes, its Emmy-winning run, its strange popularity overseas, why it disappeared after only three seasons, and the heartbreaking discovery that eventually helped Louie forgive his father.

Louie's dad wants to take him to a Packers game as somebody who doesn't like football and who doesn't wanna sit out in the freezing cold with his dad.
Louie's little brother; "Go Packers!"
Louie; "Go soak your head!"
🤣😂🤣😂🤣

I was a huge fan of this show. In 8th grade we had to write letters to celebrities as part of an English class project. I chose to write to Louie Anderson. He sent me back a very nice letter along with an autographed picture of himself posing with his cartoon counterpart. Almost 30 years later, that picture is still in my home office

Actually, the aesthetic wasn't too dissimilar from that of Bobby's World.

Thanks for shining a light on this show; I feel it doesn't get anywhere near the credit it deserves. I remember watching the first airing of the Christmas special with my family.

I… this hit me deep in a good way. Same as Hey Arnold! around the same era. It didn't treat kids as *dumb*. And… I find, looking back on it, I've cherished this show greatly. It was a highlight of my saturday morning cartoon watching.

@Dial-Up Days, I was recently watching your video on Eerie, Indiana and was wondering why the comment section is disabled? First time I've seen that for one of your videos.

Same animation style as all the Warner Bros slop back then. it's like they had AI but didn't.

I remember "Cats lick the butter"… Don't remember the context at all. I have a cat, she's never licked the butter but I never leave it out to see if she will

I think another thing to keep in mind is that a lot of us were watching the Simpsons during primetime. A cartoon about an imperfect family wasn't too out of the ordinary as a show premise, especially if it's centered around a kid who wasn't perfect himself. That, and as other commenters have pointed out, there were shows like Bobby's World with similar slice of life premise.

6:29 you know, I think I really related to the show because I was a fat kid growing up. I remember having to wear the husky sizes in jeans and shorts. I remember wanting to get nice jeans from the mall the JCPenney or any of the other department stores didn't carry husky. So I had to go to Walmart or Target and I felt poor. This show really meant a lot to a kid in the same type of situation that Louis grew up in. I didn't have much money, my house was just like Louie's, there was always something breaking, There was always something wrong. A really related to this show.

I'm British. Fox kids over here was a lot looser. Shows were just kinda shuffled together. This show never really landed here, BUT I seem to recall it a lot better than a lot of other cartoons they showed. I guess as an adult I could watch this again and get a whole new perspective

I grew up watching this as a kid and there’s a line from the show The dad said that I still use today about my car, which is “ it’s a classic, everything‘s original on it, the interior, the headlights, the oil”.

I was around in that era. I remember him talking about his life in his stand up specials on HBO before the cartoon came out.

Growing up, my mom loved watching stand up and Louie was among the few I was allowed to watch with her. I remember when Life With Louie came out, I was already a fan because I had seen his stand up.

Ever cover Project G.e.e.K.e.R.? It was a bit of an oddball Saturday morning cartoon that aired on CBS, and was also one of Billy West's early voice acting roles. Almost feels like a proto-Futurama.
