What Happened to Spread Eagle? Rob De Luca Tells All
Rob De Luca of Spread Eagle sits down with The Hair Metal Guru for an incredible conversation about the band’s rise, fall, and return.
Rob looks back at forming Spread Eagle, believing they were destined to become one of the biggest bands in the world, and what happened when their record label, MCA, failed to give them the support they needed. He also discusses the band’s 1990 debut, their 1993 follow-up, the impact of grunge, Ray West’s struggles, and why Spread Eagle never gave up.
Rob also goes into details about his other musical projects, such as working with George Lynch, Sebastian Bach, and UFO.
Now, with Ray West and Spread Eagle back together and promoting their new album The Brutal Divine, Rob reflects on the band’s remarkable journey and why they’re still here today.

Can't say enough about these guys. Paul DiBartolo was my occasional jamming buddy and got to see these guys all over New Jersey and Rockland County in their prime. Unfortuntely, like Law and Order, they were victims of MCA and poor early 90's timing… New Jersey had so many great bands that didn't get that shot that absolutely should of, whether it was bands that had deals like Non-Fiction, American Angel, TT Quick, Xenon, Prophet, Roughhouse, there were so many great bands that didn't like – Roxx, Tour De Force, Wipatraction, Little Sister. The only one that was moderately successful were the Skids, Jimmy Gnecco and Ours, Trixter.. (Besides Bon Jovi)

The song "Spread Eagle," which nobody ever mentions, is one of the greatest of the entire genre. Pure sleaze perfection, the ultimate stripper song. Too bad the new album sounds nothing like that.

Grunge by itself did not cause the downfall of hard rock. Silly myth, and it wasn't overnight. I'm writing a book on this subject and hope to discuss it on this podcast when it comes out.

Love Spread Eagle! Great band. On another note, let's take a moment to celebrate Beautiful Creatures 25th anniversary of their debut.

Great interview as always Anthony!! MCA was not a great fit for hard rock bands back in the heyday. First album was perfect..still go to it all the time to this day. Should have been massive. 🔥

I define music the same way, it’s either good/great or it sucks, It doesn’t matter what label you put on it. And, it’s the record labels that over saturated the markets anytime something became popular and then ruins it for the truly good bands.

What UFO albums did you play on? I love UFO but after Pete Way left and Michael was gone it was still good, I like the Paul Chapman era. Were you in the band then?

After listening to the first 10 minutes of the interview I had to go check out these killer licks. That was no lie. Some great guitar playing on this album I've only heard three tracks but I like all three so far I'm so glad I got to listen to a new album by a band that I've always enjoyed

I remember seeing George Lynch and Twisted Sister at the Mid-Hudson Civic Center but don't remember Bach being on the bill. I think that was Twisted Sister last show if I'm not mistaken.

I bought the SE debut when it was released. Everyone I knew loved the record and to this day, hold it in high regard. I’ve only had time to listen to a couple songs off the new record. They sound like SE should sound in 2026.
I was fortunate to see UFO with Rob play live twice. Such a great band and they made a great choice in choosing Rob as the fill-in for Pete Way.

Love Spread Eagle. The band, that is. I have a video of me lip synching to Thru These Eyes and Scratch Like A Cat dating back to late 90 or early 91. Which reminds me, I've been thinking of an idea for the Hair Metal Guru round table of a mount rushmore of underrated guitarists and my list has been since the early 90s, Harry Cody, Paul DiBartolo, Criss Oliva and Stevie Blaze

I like the first 2 records. Bought them when they first came out. The last record I bought from Spread Eagle the Metal muscle was gone. I'm hesitant to buy the new one because of it.
