America Tried to Erase Its First Black Hero from History
A Black and Wampanoag sailor who escaped enslavement, Crispus Attucks was the first man to fall when British troops opened fire on a crowd of disgruntled colonists in Boston, 1770. Patriots like Paul Revere branded it a massacre, with Attucks being assigned the role of martyr. The real controversy came after the killings. At trial, future president John Adams defended the soldiers by pointing to Attucks’ size and mixed-race background, portraying him as an intimidating threat.

May peace and blessings be upon you! Thank you, for sharing this with us
“Imperialism, like the prehistoric hunter, first kills a person spiritually and culturally before seeking to eliminate them physically. The denial of the history and intellectual achievements of Black African peoples is a form of cultural and mental murder that has already preceded and paved the way for genocide in various parts of the world.”

While he was Brave but your history makes everything about race. How TH do you know he was “The first killed” They fired and killed several people. It is presented as propaganda, BTW if he swung a club at a soldier it is assault and justifies the soldiers firing.

The right-wing take on taxes is WRONG. As adults, the colonists recognized that civilized society cannot exist without taxes. They shouted NO TAXES WITHOUT REPRESENTATION. As British citizens, they felt they deserved representation in Parliament, as was established in the Magna Carta.
In fact the infamous Tea Tax was a trick. The colonists were granted cheap tea so long as they accepted the idea that they were second-class citizens unworthy of determining their own futures.

Look up real history. Means with out blacks, distorting truth to fit black. He was one of many killed by British troops. During the Boston massacre. No hero action. The British to disperse a riot ,shot into a crowd .others went down with him. He didn't do anything heroic . Yes any man standing against British tryanny. Was brave to stand against troops.

i live in a small town outside of boston, in fifth grade we watched a movie retelling of john adams’ defense of the british who fired. just learned now what strategy he really used, as it was depicted much differently from what i recall. in the same class we went in depth on the brutality of the king philips war – so what was told, and left unsaid (crispus attucks was never even mentioned) is quite striking

I remember first learning about him in middle school for sure. This was in the late 90s. They were big on diversity and black history month in my school district. We had a whole diversity week one year where we learned about lesson known people of color throughout U.S. History. Every year we had a huge Black History Month assembly too.

It’s both cool and depressing that everything I learn about the early days of America fills in gaps. I first learned about Crispus in sanitized history books, growing up on the West coast. When I moved to Boston, I studied Boston history (and therefore America’s founding history), which filled in more of his story. When I later studied Black American history, his story developed further. And yet, the nuances and context keep expanding with each retelling.

John Adams, who some believe is a Founding Father of America, served as defense counsel for the British soldiers who killed Crispus Attucks. Adams called Attucks a "brute," which is an old term for a beast. SMH.
