Just had this idea, and wondering what the results would be. Play Michael McDonald on slow, as shown. But played in a high end restaurant kitchen, just to see what the results would be coming from the chefs. Like, could they hang for a full night's service, or would they just quit.

My friend (who is almost completely blind) has one of those cassette players and a few other updated versions. What cool units it's unfortunate that they were only used for the visually impaired.

I know you’ve named dropped one of them before, but doing full videos on Freddie Gibbs and Madlib projects would be right up your alley. The sample breakdowns on them would be crazy and Freddie Gibbs brings some amazing bars

I love cassettes I use them for multi track recording on a vintage 4 track recorder. That records at 2X the tape speed of cassettes. One limitation of consumer casette format is that in order to make it feasible they needed to find the balance between compactness and tape speed. the result was in order to get a realistic run time on the limited tape length that fits innthat cartridge they had to somewhat compromise the tape speed and go as slow as possible to still have acceptable sound. I believe it is 1 7/8 inches per second. the porta studios are double that speed at 3 3/4 and reel systems start at that as their low speed and go all the way up to 7 1/2 ips, 15 ips, and even 30. the benefit of faster tape speeds is higher frequency response, resolution and lower noise. consumer decks hit 40hz to 14khz only at that lower tape speed. I guess that is part of the charm of that cassette sound.

My dad had 2 reel to reel tape machines back in the 80's.
He basically used them like a hi fi mp3 back in the days.
i remember the sound was incredible.

I grown up with cassettes in the 90's/early 2000's.
I recently started to use cassettes again by recording them with a late 80's Sony HI-FI cassette deck.
And hearing them with a Klim K7 and/or a generic semitransparent Walkman with autoreverse/Radio/Bluetooth function.

My grandparents had that Library of Congress thing, and I used to play the hell out of it! I'm sure they never returned it either, so I wonder where it is today.

I’ll never forget realizing I could use the high-speed dub feature on my Sony boombox to figure out what Jimi was saying on Third Stone From The Sun, or create a drum and bass loop by playing a backbeat at high-speed dub.

as a technician who used to fix cassette players, you could imagine how much enjoyed when I thought the tech was dead. seeing it come back gives me a bit of ptsd lol. thankfully I don't fix that stuff anymore

Arguably, except for the TASCAM, the rest of those players (the lofi one, maybe not) have garbage mechanisms and inferior recording.

Dude, as a music lover I thoroughly enjoyed your four parter on the cassette and it history. Very interesting stuff and it took me all the way back to being a “mix tape kid” of the 70’s and 80’s. I both sent mix tapes and received them and didn’t realise at the time “how” we got there! In the UK every teenager in the country would tune into Radio One to record the weeks top 40 charts to listen to each week! That way we could access the records we couldn’t afford to buy (most kids pocket money would stretch to maybe one 7” single per week! Amazing memories, all brought back by watching your films! Thank you.

The cool thing about the LOC is that you can switch sides with the slider. The tape head moves over. It’s like that because tapes for the blind the audio ran in the same direction on both sides so that they didn’t have to pull out the tape to listen to the other side.
