Among this plethora of network TV programming in the 80s, something emerged that started to capture the hearts and imaginations of audiences everywhere…the made-for-TV movie.
Each one of the big three networks — ABC, CBS, and NBC — gave us a mix of drama, romance, suspense, thrills, historical events, sci-fi, disaster flicks, and horror each and every week throughout the 80s, via made for TV movies. These weren’t big budget spectacles. Instead, they were quite grounded. They were usually intimate, socially conscious narratives that would tackle the struggles of everyday people and families while exploring complex social issues.

Nancy McKeon was quite active in 80s TV movies. One more was 1985's "This Child is Mine," where she plays an unwed teen mother who puts her baby up for adoption. The baby is adopted by an infertile couple played by Chris Sarandon and Lindsay Wagner. A couple of years later, Nancy's character wants her back.

My grandmother was killed by a drunk driver while walking through a beach town in broad daylight. The drunk driver never stopped and was later caught with his car covered in blood. This was in the late 80's, the drunk driver served 2 years in prison and was then released.

I have a funny John Glover story. I was a student at Towson University when Glover was teaching there. My friends and I often saw him in the student lounge. Somehow, he was always there at 2:30PM, right when Batman The Animated Series reruns came on. Every time we saw him, we'd ask if he wanted to sit and watch with us. He'd ask: 'Is it one of my episodes.' And somehow, it never was. Sometimes I wonder if he checked the TV guide and avoided the lounge whenever one his episodes would air.

The Omen IV (1991) is such a movie. We don't Talk about The Omen IV, because it needs an IV. I for one have disavowed That made for TV Trash because it looks like Jorge Montesi and Dominique Othenin-Girard looked at The Last film and said "Oh hey, Damien Raped her he's not The Anti-Christ. Let's forget that Jesus returns at The End of Graham Baker's 1981 film and The whole Biblical Prophecy stuff. The Anti-Christ is a girl." To which I say "Thanks for Raping my entire Childhood Jorge and Dominique, Your film is NOT WORTH MY TIME! Don't Watch The Omen IV it is not Canon. Not mentioned was "When He's Not a Stranger", from 1989. It dealt with a brutal date r*pe, and a college that defended her attacker because he was a football star.

Adam really messed with a lot of parents’ heads for a little bit, but they still didn’t know where their kids were during most daylight hours.
The Ryan White Story scared the crap out of me. And made me so sad for him.

As a Gen-Xer, The Tracey Thurman story is imbedded into my memory. I will never forget watching that. The particular scene where he is literally about to Redrum her! I can’t even type it out, it’s so bad! The cop just stood there in complete fear and shock and didn’t intervene. Still haunts me.

I remember the night "The Karen Carpenter Story" was first broadcast, and like many other fans, I was eager to find out more about both the behind the scenes of her career, as well as the cruel disease that took her at such a young age. Cynthia Gibb did an adequate job, but I didn't feel she was particularly right for that role. Louise Fletcher was the only one in the cast who really seemed to embody the person they were playing. While the harsher aspects of Karen's life probably were sanitized both for tv standards- and at the insistence of Richard Carpenter (whom, I understand, even directed certain scenes), it was still so fascinating to watch that viewers were sad and even frustrated to see it end. They wanted to know more.

Watching The Day After while living next to the #2 place in the USA (at that time)to be bombed and having a family member that worked on Nukes just left me with daily dread. I was 8 years old.

The only made for tv movie that I remember from a kid,I was about 9 when I watched was "Don't Touch".. It made me physically uncomfortable watching that.
Even as an adult.
It was creepy and made me mad,even as a kid.

A Gen X'r not familiar with "Adam" has entered the chat. Moreover, A Gen X'r not familiar with almost all of these. "A Bunny's Tale" and "The Day After" I actually watched when aired. But the rest were Saturday night filler. Saturday night was well-know for being the abyss where unbought pilots and made for TV movies were aired. Saturday night was for Atari and going to a movie theater.

The two movies that scared me as a kid in the 80’s, Adam and the Day After. I was 8 and just turned 9 when they both came out. The Adam one scared every kid and parent. 2 years after that movie first aired, in 1985, a young boy named Raymond Fife was abducted on his way to Boy Scouts. He had taken a short cut through the woods on his bike. He was found to have been abducted by 2 men, he was tortured, sexually, physically and his head set on fire. It took days to catch the two suspects. This was 5 minutes walking distance from where I lived. Everyone was holding their own kids up until they were found. When it came out on the news, my mother called my friends house where I was at and told me to get home immediately. They lived a half mile away, and it was all fields and woods, with no houses between us. I remember running as fast as I could.

I love your channel ❤! I just joined yesterday 12-12-25 this is a great list I remember the made for tv films NBC, ABC, and CBS. I was born in 1971 ; I was also a kid in the Midwest watching a lot of these movies back when they first came on but one I never forgot is “ the day after “ I was 12 just entered the 7 th grade, my school basically made watching the day after a homework assignment lol I was so terrified! Traumatized! The next day at school we discussed it and we all were scared 😮!!! Pretty traumatized lol !! That’s being a Gen X’r we didn’t get a lot of sugar coating in our childhoods lol 😂 I am happy you mentioned how it affected Ronald Reagan I recently found out the movie scared him too from watching the showtime Doc “ the Reagan’s “ him being scared actually makes me laugh lol 😂 but thank you for this channel 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉❤

The Day After and Red Dawn had all the neighborhood kids trying to build forts and faux bomb shelters and conjuring up what we would do if war broke out, how we would cope and what we needed to do to stock pile necessary items to fight and live should we be invaded. 😂😂😂

something about Amilia not a good look for Ted, not real! I get it. but, its amazing his career was any good after that. oh yeah Hollywood loves that sort of thing. it probably boosted his career.
