10 MORE Times 90s Sitcoms Got Super Serious (Part 2)

My So-Called Gen X Life | March 28, 2026

By the 90s, the sitcom landscape was changing — along with the popular culture. The Very Special Episode became a trope and occasionally the butt of a few jokes.

There were sitcoms in the 90s that still dared to set the laughs aside from time to time and try to get serious for a minute. And that’s what I’m going to talk about in this video.

Hello, My name is Natalie and welcome to My So-Called Gen X Life. This is 10 MORE times 90s sitcoms got super serious.

I was in elementary school at the height of the D.A.R.E. Program: it offered us cool merch, a cool mascot, role playing, cartoons, a week's worth of anti-drug activities (without homework) and a literal talking police car! And the cartoons and skits they'd show us talked in detail about each type of drug, what they looked like, how they're always offered at parties and hangouts, and how they make your body feel (which unintentionally always looked fun). If anything it made us more aware of the drugs and added more positive associations with them than we'd have otherwise!

These days I wouldn't smoke anything mysterious I found on the ground what with so much stuff being laced these days, but in the 90s I probably would have.

Ive been binging a lot of ur videos because this is the stuff I watched my mom watch as a kid. There are some I remember being more tuned into but I remmeber her watching so many of these haha.

My mom actually named me after a character in Boy Meets World too! So I really have a soft spot for that show.

I understand why blossom isn't on disney but i wish they'd sell it and let someone else rerun it. It was a huge part of a lot of our younger years.

I havent seen your whole very special episode playlist but a show that I never hear anyone bring up that I loved and was upset when it got cancelled was South Central on Fox. That show is one the realest shows tackling some serious issues. These very special episodes are nothing by comparison. The show was raw. There was a crack baby son/brother on the show, lets start with that. Even now, you watch it and feels like networks wouldnt put it on TV today. It was short (1 season) lived but very good. Look it up if you havent already.

I love these videos. I just discovered your channel. I know it's not a sitcom, but one very special episode sticks out to me. 21 jump Street where Johnny Depp's character has to protect another student who has AIDS. It was a really good episode. At the beginning it stated he contracted AIDS through a blood transfusion because he's a hemophiliac. At the end he opens up the Johnny Depp's character saying that he contracted AIDS through sexual contact with another guy.

that whole thing with Carlton and Will and the pills made no sense. They were in Will's locker. Carlton was old enough to be responsible for what he put in his mouth, not even knowing what the pills were. It's not good that Will had them, but he is in no way responsible for Carlton , going into Will's locker, and taking pills that a. didn't belong to him b. he didnt' even know what they were.

    2 more that wasn’t mentioned:

Eddie getting beat up by a Chicago gang. Carl says “Now I wouldn’t go that far.” Then Eddie walks in and has the most gruesome image and moment of the show with his face bloodied and says “I would.” Traumatizing.

Will getting shot on The Fresh Prince. Carlton buys a gun as a result, and Will yells at him “I saved your life! Give me the gun Carlton!” while in tears.

20:05 – Maybe it's just my nostalgia for his appearance as a campy villain in one of my more liked episodes of Are You Afraid of the Dark, but … Charles S Dutton's acting really slapped, here.
