Your Favorite Disney Show Was Secretly a 5 Year NFL Ad

If you watched Disney Channel around the turn of the millennium, you probably remember The Jersey as the show where a group of kids could put on a magical football jersey and suddenly become professional athletes.

But that is only the part most of us remember.

Behind the familiar sports cameos and after-school lessons, The Jersey eventually became one of the strangest shows Disney Channel ever made. The magical jersey developed an ancient history involving Egypt, Merlin and King Arthur. The kids encountered ghosts, time travel and rogue government agents. And at one point, David Carradine played a villain who wanted to use the jersey to take control of the President of the United States.

Then things got even stranger.

Production ended years before Disney finished airing the episodes, new installments quietly appeared as late as 2004, and today the series remains largely absent from official streaming and home video. Fans and preservationists have spent years tracking down missing episodes and piecing the show back together.

So how did a simple Disney Channel sports series become this bizarre—and how did a show featuring some of the biggest athletes of its era virtually disappear?
