Your brain didn’t invent reality — it inherited it | Lisa Feldman Barrett

Psychologist Lisa Feldman Barrett explains how collective belief creates the things we treat as fact, and how fast that belief can collapse.

Psychologist Lisa Feldman Barrett argues much of what feels like objective reality — color, money, even the idea of a “president” — is social reality: built through collective agreement, not discovered as fact. Red isn’t a property of light; it’s something your brain learned, taught by everyone who ever called it red. Money works the same way, being valuable only because enough people agree, which is why that value vanished during the housing crisis in 2008.

But this power has limits. Consensus can shape a mountain, a color, or a currency — but not biology. A group can’t agree that glass is food and make it true. According to Feldman Barrett: reality is flexible, but not infinitely so.

1:49 – meaning vs labels; 2:04 – 'relational present' bu**s**t; 2:51 – all knowledge 'culturally inherited'?… and there's more of this tripe – 'social' this, 'social' that; 4:09 – 'money'… finally 'money'; then spirals into the 'state of the world is your fault' argument.

This is such a fascinating idea because most of us assume we're seeing the world exactly as it is, without realizing how much our past experiences and learned beliefs shape what we perceive. That thought hit me even harder after reading The Forbidden Laws Of The Ruling Few by Aven Marclay. It genuinely challenged the way I understood reality and made me question how many things I'd accepted as truth simply because I'd been conditioned to see them that way. The most unsettling part was realizing that two people can experience the same world yet interpret it through completely different mental frameworks. I'd recommend this book because it pushes you to examine the beliefs behind your perception instead of blindly trusting every assumption. Sometimes changing your life begins with questioning the reality you've always taken for granted.

I enjoyed the TV series Pluribus, but the premise was shaky. Humanity was infected by a hive mind virus that only a few people could resist. Hive mind IS the human condition already, but most folks do not SEE it. We generally don’t recognize the preordained mental paths that we travel upon. That is not (always) a negative. This helps us to navigate the social world of other humans.

The intellect of the ordinary man functions within the limited framework of the 'known' just as do electronic brains. True creativeness can only be realized in the Unknown of the given instant.

No, a mountain is not Culturally inherited.. it is a feature of reality.. the word for Mountain is inherited.. a color is not culturally inherited.. the word for tbat color is. You have things upside down and backwards. We don't manifest the color red. It existed long before we did.

I once experienced full amnesia. I saw all the colors but they were technically from my point of view one color. The concept color came later and then the differentiation followed modern standards. Same with written words it just looked like chicken scratch or hieroglyphics at first then it turned into letters then words. And now even though I know no Chinese when I see Chinese I know that is not chicken scratch or a doodle that's a word. There are probably letters maybe not but I'm not as confused by it anymore. So the experience differs greatly based on what has been learned from the environment even though realistically the same thing is occuring in all environments. I.e. red was always red I just now noticed it's red. But the red never changed. I just didn't have the awareness neccesary to seperate it from the others as it's own distinct thing. A similar thing occurs in reverse if one meditates. The collapse of distinctions is known as oneness. That is an experience of the boundary of outside and inside going away or showing it was never there in the first place and it took the thinking mind to seperate them in the first place.

some odd comments here….maybe need to explain a little further….much of adulthood is (or could be) spent trying to see things "as they are" without preconceived ideas…meditation helps, as can psychedelics (if both done correctly), and other practices…certainly our daily lives are lived mostly within our perception box, but we need to get out now and then for a wider perspective….
