World’s Loneliest Existence Caught on Camera | Tales From the Bottle

Qxir | August 22, 2026

Rolling cameras stumble across the world’s loneliest man, hidden from the world for decades, but did he want to be found?

“The Man of the Hole (c. 1960s – c. July 2022), or the Tanaru Indian, was an Indigenous person who lived alone in the Amazon rainforest in the Brazilian state of Rondônia. He was the sole inhabitant of the Tanaru Indigenous Territory, a protected Indigenous territory demarcated by the Brazilian government in 2007.
It is not known what language the Man of the Hole spoke, what his people called themselves, or what his name was, although it may have been Tupian. He was the last surviving member of his people following their genocide by Brazilian settlers in the 1970s–1990s and chose to remain isolated until his death in 2022. Living primarily by hunting and gathering and moving frequently, he left behind a deep hole of unknown purpose in each of his former homes, giving rise to his nickname. After surviving a further attack by armed ranchers in 2009, he was found dead in his home in August 2022.”

I bet it was to keep cool in the hot and humid forest.. I would definitely seek anykind of relief from the heat especially when I was trying to sleep.. when you don’t have AC or a simple fan and a few feet in the ground can be several degrees cooler I know I would definitely dig me a deep hole to sleep in..

I like how they keep indigenous populations safe while we're just supposed to live with a completely collapsed culture in a failing economy

Like it's okay for us to suffer like this but it would be cruel to the natives

Hot take: maybe these people should be protected like endangered animals are in Africa – with armed guards.
Treat the murderers and terrorists as any other mass murderer or terrorist would be treated by the justice system.

There also plenty of tribes that fight war against each other . So get of your soap box. Funai also got defunded , becasue the government realized what huge waste of money the whole project is.

I met a guy in rehab (he was there for weed) who had lived a crazy life. He didn't speak English very fluently, but he told us about the 13 years he lived in Laos with his family, never staying in the same spot twice, always moving. This was during a war (I'm really not familiar with history but this guy was probably in his 40's, about 8ish years ago, and he was talking about his childhood though I don't know exactly when he left to come to the US or any other details.

He said that there was constant helicopters overhead, they just had to keep moving and that his father gathered some poppies and extracted the oh•p•um milk/sap from it, and that there was a time where agent orange was sprayed down onto them and his father put some of that stuff he gathered into handkerchiefs, and had them breathe through them. His little sister refused, and she later died. They spent 13 years running for their lives. What a horrible thing to have to go through, especially as parents trying to protect your children. So fkn sad.

One man experiencing all the vile disgusting parts of post-modern capitalism that boomers love to pretend don’t exist and everyone under 40 are getting their own taste of first hand

Because of his solitary isolation he is perhaps disease free. Thus trying to come into contact with expeditioners or other tribes would knowingly be a disease related death sentence.

I wish I could pretend it surprises me that this would happen. And I don't even think it was because the corporate overlords thought they were sub-human. I'm of the belief that they only reason they don't raze entire neighborhoods of modern civilization is that we're more profitable as a harvestable resource than any resources we're built on. I can imagine them seeing an inhabited village as just a section of land that provides a quick influx of revenue as timber, then remains useful as grazing land for cattle and suchlike for rent. The locals aren't providing them revenue or political influence, so what use are they? Not all psychopaths are powerful, but all of the most powerful are psychopaths.
That said, seeing all the thoughtful and respectful comments, I fell a bit bad that my first thought when hearing one man had built multiple huts, multiple gardens of vegetables, and dug individual holes in each location, was that we'd found someone's Minecraft play through. They just moved on when they didn't hit any resources after digging a few layers.

7:33 I read on Wikipedia that although he mostly refused the gifts from FUNAI and was suspicious of them, he sometimes warned the observing teams about pitfalls he had made. So either they gained some level of trust or he just didn't want them to ruin his traps for animals. Anyway, I really liked your animations. Great work!

🤔 Imagine the immune system on that guy… Could go either way. On a different note, it's my firm belief that human evolution is now in the development of morality… Special, the respect for human life. People that would slay such a man, or decapitate innocent aid workers, are NOT the same species as I.
